Position: Research Librarian, Library, Research and Learning Resources (181383)

Closing Date: 16 October 2020


Job Outline:

The post holder will deliver specialist library services in support of research. The post holder will provide and promote a range of activities to include one or more of the following: repositories and Open Scholarship; teaching and skills development for research; impact and dissemination; research data management, including data visualisation; research collections strategy; and, support for research assessment exercises and strategy development.

Qualifications:

Essential

  • Master's degree

  • Knowledge of the research lifecycle and potential of the library to provide support;

  • Understanding of the information needs of researchers in high education;

  • Ability to work in a team environment, supporting colleagues and sharing expertise;

  • Ability to work to deadlines and deal with unforeseen issues and changing circumstances;

  • Organisational, planning, prioritisation and project management skills;

  • Ability to present complex concepts in a clear manner;

  • Ability to contribute to strategic planning;

  • Excellent IT skills (Microsoft Office applications, email and the web);

  • Demonstrable experience of working with researchers in HE to promote and support at least one of the following: Open Access, research skills development, impact and dissemination;

  • Experience of delivering support services;

  • Demonstrable/proven project management skills;

  • Experience of working with colleagues from a range of professional backgrounds, including IT specialists;

  • Experience of influencing and negotiation;

  • Experience of working across organisational boundaries;

  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills;

  • Enthusiastic and proactive 'can do' approach;

  • Team player and willingness to be flexible and adaptable, to both audience and priorities;

Desirable

  • Knowledge and awareness of recent developments in the field of higher education, in particular Open Scholarship;

  • Understanding and experience of the use of, and requirements for, information resources by researchers;

  • Familiar with research software and application context. Expert knowledge in ArcGIS;

  • Demonstrable experience of supporting the information needs of researchers in the high education sector;

  • Experience of supporting the REF;

  • Experience of research communication tools and research repository systems;

  • Demonstrable ability to identify new opportunities and creative solutions;

  • Experience of leading/motivating project teams;

  • Experience of project recovery, i.e. ability to analyse, trouble-shoot, and problem-solve.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Developing and delivering research support

(1) Open Scholarship

  • Promote efficient workflows to support the increasing demands of Open Access policies from funder and institutional mandates;
  • With institutional stakeholders, provide direction on the use and development of research outputs and research repository systems to facilitate the capture of quality data, and deposits of full text content at The University of Nottingham;
  • Understand and champion the needs of researchers in the development of the research repository services;
  • Monitor and report on developments in scholarly communication, open access, institutional repositories and related legislative initiatives, and promote developments to Faculties and influence repository system developments;

(2) Teaching and skills development

  • Develop and deliver high level information-related training e.g. information skills, copyright in the digital age, integrated within RGS research training programmes and targeting PGRs and early career researchers;
  • Develop Research Support web pages outlining library services and ensure accurate information on related University communication channels;

(3) Research data, including data visualisation

  • Explore research data management (RDM) requirements in collaboration with institutional stakeholders and coordinate LRLR input into RDM projects and initiatives;
  • In partnership with colleagues in professional services, Faculties and Schools and research groups, explore and develop specialist support services for data mining and digital humanities;
  • Work in collaboration with the Data Visualisation Librarian Impact and dissemination;
  • Develop the LRLR contribution to the analysis of the research base at UNNC, including bibliometric analysis of impact and maximising citations;
  • Provide tailored information services to researchers and research groups, assisting them in keeping up-to date with the literature, undertaking systematic searches and supporting them in their utilisation of tools for collaboration and dissemination;
  • Collaborate in the design and implementation of online tools in support of research Research collections strategy;
  • Work with LRLR Content and Discovery to develop a research support strategy that delivers more agile and targeted access to research materials;

2. Project planning and project management

  • Facilitating agreement with senior management of project scope, goals, deliverables and success criteria;

  • Compiling the business case and securing funding;

  • Design, planning, and delivering the programme/projects, employing appropriate methodologies (e.g. PRINCE 2) and project tools (e.g. MS project, Sharepoint);

  • Co-ordinating the activity of internal and external project/work stream leads;

  • Line management of external contract resources and internal project team staff;

  • Monitoring and reporting;

  • Benefits management;

  • Initiation and management of project/programme meetings;

  • Development of milestone and operational project plans for team and project board/stakeholders;

  • Identification of project risks/issues and the creation of appropriate mitigation plans and/or escalation actions;

  • Management of the budgets to agreed tolerances;


3. Wider contribution

  • To contribute to the development of LRLR research support service development and LRLR strategy, communication and engagement;

  • To actively participate in the Research and Learning Services team in order to facilitate management of, and communication;

  • To liaise with colleagues throughout LRLR to maintain awareness of potential developments and plan for their implementation;

  • To propose, manage and/or participate in LRLR projects to enhance the service;

  • Network with colleagues in other HE or external organizations to explore engagement opportunities in order to generate mutually supportive partnerships;

  • Presentation of written or oral reports on projects and initiatives;

  • Representation of the Team/Section on LRLR/University working/collaborative groups and at national conference, committees, etc.;

  • Seek internal and external funding sources for development and innovation;

4. Other

  • Participate in training and staff development schemes as trainer or trainee as appropriate;

  • Maintain appropriate professional development, expertise and awareness;

  • Undertake other tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be required.
