Reporting to the Head of OUTCOMES, UNITE China, you will work in the Center of Excellence tasked with driving universal addressability for media with integrated data strategies, enabling a true agency of the future.

Your dream is to deliver digital transformations that steer marketing to be as data-driven as possible. Making this dream a reality will require you to bring the power of data to every facet of UNITE and Unilever’s marketing. You are constantly striving to leverage the best use of 1st, 2nd and 3rd party data, their connections and the latest martech solutions in order to drive better OUTCOMES across multi-screen planning, social seeding and performance-oriented channels. You will be heavily involved throughout the data driven marketing journey from planning to activation to outcome verification and be assumed a crucial role to provide data governance and drive media innovations.

You will work in partnership with the entire UNITE China, from the category leads to other Centers of Excellence to ensure the entire organization is following the best practices that your team sets when it comes to data strategies and technology used. Your passion to share your team’s expertise with the wider organization should be unparalleled. You build capabilities that will surprise and delight today but become mainstream tomorrow. You do this built on three key pillars – a passion for your craft, your desire to impart your craft expertise and train and develop others, and your ability to scale this across the team. Overall, your team OUTCOMES is a critical function that will help transform our collective teams from their focus on generating media and business outputs; to teams that deliver media and business outcomes.

Critically, you’ll combine this industry leading knowledge of data strategies, platform tools with a deep understanding of the client’s business, including but not limited to all aspects of marketing. You will also understand intimately the data products and services offered by WPP and identify how they could be leveraged to further accelerate the client’s business. This is all combined with a maximisation of all the knowledge, research and investment that already sits with Unilever.

THREE BEST THINGS ABOUT THE ROLE: MEASURES OF SUCCESS:

IN THREE MONTHS:

  • Mapped out the critical relationships for you with the client across all key stakeholders, including brands, corporate functions like Brand team, Media, CMI, Digital Hub, as well as across UNITE China and the Unilever global media teams in other parts of the world in WPP
  • Articulated the ambition and roadmap of data driven marketing from Unilever’s perspective
  • Developed and delivered an audience led approach on how data strategies incorporate with design and delivery within UNITE China teams, ensuring they are fully capable of following outcome centric practices as they plan and activate across all of Unilever’s media investment.
  • Actively coached and mentored the entire UNITE China team on the best possible applications of your recommended data approach
  • Built a clear way of working with your team and clients, articulating all deliverables, timelines and the objectives and key results required to operate effectively.
  • Demonstrated that you are a hands-on, collaborative team leader who is building a culture that understands the power of properly utilized data across the agency.

IN SIX MONTHS:

  • You are seen as someone who demonstrates a passionate and deep understanding of data strategies across platforms and channels, and sought out as the expert by both client and UNITE stakeholders.
  • You have a strong working relationship with your colleagues across functions in the UNITE China team and you are sought out by the regional and global teams that work on Unilever in WPP increasingly as a source of sound advice. 
  • You are able to articulate a strategic and innovative roadmap for ensuring a best-in-class understanding of the latest consumer and platform trends becomes a systemic, cultural foundation of UNITE China
  • Proven your ability to effect change with the launch and implementation of multiple bespoke solutions for UNITE China that demonstrate tangible, quantified improvements to the wider team’s effectiveness and efficiency

IN TWELVE MONTHS:

  • The client assessment of your team’s expertise and performance on the business is seen as rock solid.
  • You are the embodiment of a WPP expert on data strategies in China, with the ability to leverage the best of WPP in the service of further enhancing UNITE China’s data and analytics platforms
  • You are seen by the Unilever China Leadership as someone who is a key player of their extended marketing organization.
  • Develop playbook, best practices and golden rule on audience led and data driven marketing
  • You are the subject matter expert to both UNITE and Unilever stakeholder when it comes to all aspect of data strategies and technology used across consumers, platforms and the client’s categories in China, able to drive data driven marketing across different communication channels
  • Build and nurture senior client relationships where you act as a trusted advisor on steering the client’s marketing investment to effectively deliver their business goals. The foundation of this will be your unmatched understanding of data, platforms and technology that matter most to accelerating the client’s business.
  • Set forth a vision for your team (both direct reports and other UNITE stakeholders) on what needs to be delivered on the business and empower and inspire them to make it a reality.
  • Develop a deep understanding of what UNITE and WPP can offer its clients and the full extent of our capabilities, tools and frameworks across the communication development process.
  • Consistently grow the talent pool within UNITE China by identifying the star performers on your extended team and mentoring them as well as helping those under-performing overcome the barriers that stand in their way to effective performance.
  • You are passionate about deconstructing your area of specialism for others and constantly look to provide toolkits and enablers to help others develop the same level of passion and skill
  • You are a trainer and a coach consistently imparting your skills to others
  • You must be a client advisor with an ability to effectively work with multiple stakeholders at the client’s end (marketing, media, CMI, Digital Hub, etc…), across advertising and marketing agencies, within and outside WPP.
  • You must have an in-depth understanding of emerging communication channels and platforms, including but not limited to programmatic, social, EC, new retail and how they interrelate. As well as an understanding of the brand and demand tensions on Unilever’s business
  • You are familiar with how data could be used in driving business outcome and how business outcome could be measured by data
  • You must have excellent written and verbal communication skills with evolved present-to-persuade and facilitation skills. Also equip strong data analytics skills and can see business implications beyond data
  • You are a subject matter expert and a high learning agility with the ability to understand how your craft is evolving ensuring that you have an eye not just to the present but to the future.
  • Have the ability to demonstrate a depth of understanding of the industry, the client’s business and brands as well as changes to consumer and media in senior level client conversations.
  • Understand the business principles and key issues for our industry while also display softer skills on talent management and retention and product skills that help you drive and deliver quality work.
  • You are commercially minded, but not commercially driven, working closely and collaboratively across WPP to identify opportunities to accelerate Unilever’s business growth and then sell-in and deliver solutions that leverage consolidated WPP strengths and result in ideas that move our client’s business forward.
  • You excel at the ability to influence without authority but with the organization’s support to ensure that even without authority there is accountability.
  • Collaboration, accountability, persuasive are critical for this role.
