Smit (Nanjing) leather Chemicals Co. Ltd, is part of a legal structure of Smit&Zoon has been set up in 2006 in Nanjing， Smit Nanjing R&D center has also been set up in 2016 in Nanjing. We develop, manufacture and market a full range of Fatliquors and re-tanning and finishing for the leather industry. Leather is our passion and we have become one of the market leaders in this field by specializing in the development, production, and application of leather chemicals. Our range of wet end chemicals includes high quality Syntans, Fatliquors and finishing which play a major role in determining the final properties and quality of the finished leather. The tanneries using our products produce high quality leathers for all the leading manufacturers of garments, sport shoes, furniture and car upholstery.

BACKGROUND OF THE POSITION

In our European plants, we have capabilities for both chemical syntheses of ingredients and formulations of the finished products. In our Nanjing plant, we formulate leather chemicals with ingredients that are supplied by our European subsidiaries or purchased in China. For the future we want to source more local ingredients and import less from Europe in order to reduce costs and delivery times.

Our most important ingredients are natural or synthetic polymers. This causes variations in properties and appearance of the ingredients that are dependent of their source, because of these quality differences, reformulation of our products is required when replacing European ingredients by Chinese alternatives. The Sr. Formulation Chemist will play a key role in sourcing Chinese ingredients. The position will do market research together with the purchasing department. He or she will conduct bench scale formulations and testing. In the next step, the position will plan leather application testing at the facilities of our external partners. The position will give guidance to the introduction of the newly developed products in the manufacturing department and support the improvement of the production process.

The position will report to R&D Supervisor of Smit Nanjing, but under technological guidance from Sale Director/Manger and our European R&D manager and in close operation with other disciplines in Europe and China. He or she will start with a thorough training program in the Italy. He or she will set up the Finishing R&D laboratory in Nanjing with the help of R&D in Europe.

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

• Develop formulations for new products, that have similar or better performance than products in existing Smit & zoon European product range, but mainly based on ingredients sourced in China.

• In close cooperation with the purchasing department, source relevant ingredients and its suppliers in the Chinese and Asian markets

• Improve current products, address manufacturing issues, evaluate new and alternate raw materials, reformulate existing products and seeks cost savings.

• Effectively interface with Operations, Sales, Product management, Regulatory Affairs, R&D and other cross-functional disciplines in China and Europe to accomplish project goals.

  
  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Develop formulations for a variety of leather chemicals, mainly finishing products in order to meet customer requirements.

• Source relevant ingredients and its suppliers in close cooperation with the purchasing department.

• Execute screenings of ingredients samples and competitors’ products.

• Support the setup of toll manufacturing arrangements at suppliers for outsourcing of production of intermediates.

• Prepare samples for stability and application testing.

• Execute, evaluate, and summarize results of stability and physical properties testing.

• Give support to and evaluate external leather application testing.

• Coordinate and execute bench top, pilot, manufacturing scale-up and verification batches.

• Perform process improvement projects and analyze formulas for reformulation.

• Create rework procedures.

• Assist manufacturing with product and process improvement.

• Investigate and resolve customer complaints.

• Handle customer requests.

• Maintain databases of raw materials, products, recipes including regulatory aspects.

Quality, safety, health and environment:

• Work in compliance with the laws and the rules and regulations of the company.

• Handles hazardous substances in a way that is safe for people and the environment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor or above degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field, M.S will be a plus

• Three-Five years industry formulation experience in leather chemicals, especially finish products.

• Comprehensive knowledge and practical experience with product/process development, laboratory techniques and regulatory requirements.

• Self-motivation, open minded, hands-on, initiative taking, reliable and creative personality

• Good command of English language, excellent command of Chinese language.

• Must be able to communicate effectively in an international and cross-functional team environment.

• Sound judgment and decision-making skills.

A.Smit @ Zoon BV. founded in 1821 and registered in the Netherlands, is a manufacturer of chemical specialties for leather applicantions.
The demands for leather product are in the fields of indoor decorations (Furniture), garments, shoes and bags are gardually increasing, especially the demands of domestic leather like emulated leather sofas. Besides, due to the continual pervasion of cars, the market of emulated leather products is also increasing.
It therefore was decided to invest and build a production facility in China, and to expand its manufacturing capability. The chemical plant will produce high quality leather chemicals in relatively large scale and high techniques for local tanneries.
