Main Responsibilities:

1.Plan and manage laboratory infrastructure, to allow test work to be carried out to support collaboration with customers. Takes a leading role in identifying new test requirements, and gaps in capability to support them. Proposes and manages projects to address gaps in capability, by modifying or extending the capability of existing facilities, or introduction of new and additional facilities, in co-operation with the site facilities team. (Large projects may be delegated to a project manager.)

2. Responsible for safety, health and environmental systems, including procedures, training, and compliance monitoring, for the laboratory infrastructure.

Develops and implements policies, procedures, and standards for lab operations to ensure the safety, efficiency, effectiveness, and quality control of the laboratory infrastructure. Ensure timely resolution of audit and other non-conformances to satisfy company standards and enable the site to maintain ISO9001/14001 and OHSAS 18001 accreditation and COSHH regulatory compliance.

Ensures fellow employees follow legal standards and safety regulations, and company procedures, for installing, operating, handling, and disposing of equipment and hazardous materials. Arranges training of technical staff and lab technicians on the safe and correct use of the lab and its equipment.

3. Reviews lab test requests for safety, and compatibility with the lab capabilities and capacity, in consultation with appropriately skilled and experienced staff.

4. Manages the day to day activities of the lab support team, including installation, maintenance, modification, and removal of tools and facilities in the lab. Working closely with the IC Manager and IC team, maintains a schedule of work for the lab support team, and a schedule of lab test bay usage.

5. Liaises closely with site facilities team, to ensure shared facilities meet laboratory needs, and contribute to site facilities planning.

6. Supervises the ordering, inventory, storage, and maintenance of gases, other lab supplies, and lab instruments, as required to meet the agreed plans of lab users. Monitors the lab safety systems and arranges for their maintenance and repair. Responsible for control of the budget for these items.

7. Develops and maintains appropriate calibration control of lab instruments, and ensures technical staff are trained how to calibrate instruments.

8. Serves on site safety committee, attending monthly meetings, and responsible for agreed IC lab actions and metrics reports. Liaise with site and corporate EHS managers, in order to plan and continuously improve systems and processes which are compatible with the global EHS objectives.

 

Scope of the job

1.Supports the Technology and Engineering teams in the accomplishment of project tasks, with both facilities and technical expertise.

2.Manages and develops the laboratory support staff, including technicians. Manages the day to day work of the lab technicians, within the overall priorities set by the Technology Manager.

3.Ensures there are sufficient trained staff with suitable equipment to deal with tasks such as hazardous gas cylinder changes, gas leaks, and laboratory alarms, as detailed in the site emergency procedures.

4.In co-operation with the Technology, Engineering and Project Managers, maintains a monthly plan for operational activities in the IC laboratory. Uses this plan to provide a monthly order forecast for gas usage, and annual budget estimate, and places orders for bulk gases as required. Also proposes lab equipment and facilities requirements for the annual budget.

5.Installation, modification, and removal of facilities and equipment in test bays as required to meet the agreed plan, and efficiently utilise the IC lab facility.

6.Maintenance of the lab infrastructure facilities, including gas supply systems, exhaust and extraction systems, and waste water treatment systems

 

Skills / Knowledge / Experience:

1.Graduate, preferably in chemistry

2.At least 10 years industrial or research experience in a relevant hazardous laboratory environment, including at least 3 years with supervisory and laboratory project management responsibility including management of budgets.

3.Fluent in English

4.Knowledge of legal and EHS requirements for lab operation, and safe handling of gases and other hazardous materials. Familiarity with appropriate monitoring techniques and PPE. Good planning and supervisory skills. Ability to co-ordinate demands from multiple users and manage priorities.
