Job Description: Senior Designer

Role Summary:

The purpose of this role is to assist the local design community to show professionalism in design by identifying customer needs and translating this in the best packaging design solution keeping the DS Smith TCO thinking in mind for increasing sales, lowering down costs and managing risks.

Expectations of the role

As part of the DS Smith Design team China, under the functional coordination of the Design & Innovation Manager the job holder will:

• Carry out multi-materials (Corrugated, EPP, EPE, Molded Pulp, Wooden…) design activities under the driving dimensions and conceptual directions

• Actively support packaging/solutions development corresponding with local Asian Industrial Segment market & customer needs

• Create multi-material packaging solutions based on customer briefs and/or pro-active briefs

• Manage the design tasks in multiple projects simultaneously

• Support Design & Innovation Manager and sales community with insight of local manufacturing possibilities.

• Take full responsibility of managing whole process of sampling (Specification for external partners, validating and/or testing samples, presenting samples to customers).

• Attend customer visits with or without the sales community being present, support customers’ engineering team locally.

• Attend packaging verification tests.

• Carry out all administrative design related tasks (creating specifications, 3D visuals or packaging instructions…)

• Day to day design & specification problem troubleshooting with suppliers processes at their end.

• Manage all customer related design documentation completion requests.

• Support some basic graphical design and high-resolution 3D rendering

Supports the Operation Team in:

• Documentation of the specifications and monitoring of third party suppliers who are manufacturing on behalf of DS Smith Shanghai.

• Surveillance on the specification compliance status for all third party supplied Packaging Materials.

• Supporting in identifying potential supplier and supplier’s design capability

Supports the Business Development in:

• Supporting in customer needs; identifying, characterizing and developing new business opportunities.

• Supporting the ultimate value proposition specific for this market segment, that will support focused customer offer development, with a process that ‘packages’ offers to guarantee win

• Supporting activities to drive customer engagement and value in order to achieve planned objectives and related DS Smith Shanghai targets in line with strategy.

Must Have Qualifications & Attributes

• Diploma or college degree (ex. Industrial Design, Packaging, Art, Graphics) preferably in technical design

• A packaging focused designer with a minimum 3 years’ experience within industrial packaging design

• Automotive packaging design experiences are good plus

• Able to convert customer’s conceptual ideas into engineered deliverables. Understand transportation requirement and how it would affect the structural design

• Experienced with various packaging materials used in multi-material solutions and transport packaging.

• Experience with ESKO ArtiosCAD software and Kongsberg cutting table is a plus

• Experience with 3D design software Creo, Solidworks or similar

• Open minded and positive when dealing with challenging and changing situations

• A team player that is open to collaborate while seeking solutions.

• Show enthusiasm, drive and determination, result- and efficiency oriented.

• Support organising Customer or Internal Design Workshops.

• Prefer good English in reading and writing

服务于DS Smith中国设计部, 在设计和创新经理的带领下, 执行以下（但不限于）工作：

• 在驱动尺寸和概念方向下开展多材料 (瓦楞纸板、EPP、EPE、模压纸浆、木质...) 设计活动，积极支持与当地亚洲工业板块市场相对应的包装解决方案开发和客户需求

• 根据客户简报和/或积极主动的简报创建多材料包装解决方案

• 同时管理多个项目中的设计任务

• 支持设计和创新经理和销售组, 深入了解当地的制造技术及落地可能性。

• 全面负责管理整个打样制作过程 (外部合作伙伴规范, 验证和测试样品, 向客户展示样品)。

• 在销售部门在场或不在场的情况下参加客户访问, 在当地为客户的工程团队提供支持。

• 参加包装验证测试。

• 执行所有与日常设计相关的任务 (创建规格、3D 视觉效果或包装说明...等等)

• 供应商流程的日常设计和规格问题排除。

• 管理所有与客户相关的设计文档完成请求。

• 支持一些基本的图形设计和高分辨率3D 渲染

支持营运部门：

• 监督并管理第三方供应商的所有设计相关及规范性文件的合理性。

• 监控所有第三方提供的包装材料的规格合规状态。

• 支持识别潜在供应商和供应商的设计能力

支持销售部门

• 支持客户需求，内部要求，其他信息收集和开发新的潜在商机

• 配合总部策略要求，参与并制定行业设计优化方案，确保设计方案能帮助增长公司销售指标

• 支持配合所有和DS Smith中国总部策略相关的客户维护和销售指标活动

必须具备的资格和经验：

• 大专或以上学历 (如工业设计、包装、艺术、图形), 最好是技术相关的设计专业

• 专注于包装的设计师, 至少3年的工业包装设计经验

• 汽车包装设计经验优先

• 能够将客户的概念理念转化为合理方案，了解运输要求及其对结构设计的影响

• 在多材料解决方案和运输包装中使用的各种包装材料方面经验丰富。

• 有 ESKO ArtiosCAD 软件和Kongsberg 切割机操作经验者优先

• 必须熟练运用3D 设计软件 Creo、Solidworks 或类似软件

• 在处理具有挑战性和不断变化的情况时, 心胸开阔, 积极向上

• 在寻求解决方案的同时, 愿意合作的团队成员。

• 表现出热情、干劲和决心, 注重结果和效率。

• 支持组织客户或内部设计研讨会。

• 良好的读写英语即可，英语优秀者优先

-    必要时，在得斯玛尚无工厂的地区寻找、遴选、考核和授权外部包装制造商作为合作伙伴，确保它们的产品符合客户的标准；
-    为项目安排一位全球联络人，负责与客户方联络人商谈在项目涉及地区的所有相关商业条款；
-    管理所有与客户当地工厂和得斯玛供应商之间的日常行政、供应、运营工作（订单、订货、运输、发票等）。



为满足如此复杂的要求，得斯玛在中国新设运营点，作为“地区物流控制塔”统筹公司在华的上述营运活动。

Facilitated by access to digital information and open trade routes, our customers can procure materials at the lowest price in one location and ship them to a location with low labour rates, as engineers in yet another location make product design decisions and procurement is on the other side of the globe.

Products are no longer designed, produced and sold in a single country/region: It is not unusual to see Design is in the EU, Procurement in China and Production of the same product, hence requiring the same packaging, in Mexico, China & Europe. Meaning that our customers expect DS Smith to adapt and change our game plan to have to optimum set-up to also now support them on global projects as follows:

-    Design a multi-material global packaging solution & ensure global packaging
performance governance: Packaging specifications, performances, colour
management, FSC etc.
-    Find, select, audit and qualify external packaging manufacturing partners in needed geographies, where DS Smith has no manufacturing capabilities, ensuring
compliance to customer’s standards
-    Have one Global central point of contact to negotiate all commercial conditions, with customer’s global counterpart, for the different geographies impacted by project
-    Manage all day to day admin supply operations (call-offs, ordering, shipments,
invoicing…) between local customer plant and DS Smith’s supplier.

As a result of this complex demand DS Smith has created a new operation in China, which acts as the “Regional Control Tower” and umbrella the above mentioned operations in China.
