Job Title: Sr. Technician –Bioprocessing

Reports operationally to: (Senior) Scientist Fermentation/Downstream processing
The Challenge
? To apply specialist knowledge and expertise with regard to Fermentation & Downstream processing and to develop, integrate and apply it in R&D projects and other research activities within the IBP Shanghai operations and support bioprocess manufacturing, by contributing to the generation of new expertise and new concepts; and taking care of setting and following the QESH standards in the lab.
? He/ She will perform experiments on lab scale and supporting manufacturing in accordance with the DSM quality and safety regulations. Translating the findings in potential business results will be an important aspect of the job. The process developed will be implemented in production plants in the DSM network.
? The DSM Biotechnology Center (DBC) is the largest center for biotechnological Research and Development (R&D) within DSM. The DBC steers the biotechnology competence within DSM and is responsible for the realization of biotechnological innovations and the development of new products and cost-effective production processes for DSM business units such as DSM Food Specialties (DFS), DSM Sinochem Pharmaceuticals (DSP), DSM Nutritional Products (DNP) and DSM Biobased Products and Services (DBPS).
? Products and processes that are supported by DBC cover antibiotics as well as enzymes and ingredients for various food applications. In addition, DBC supports emerging businesses by applying enzymes and microorganisms to produce bio-fuels and other bio based chemicals for various applications in DSM businesses including polymers.
? DBC is mainly located in Delft, The Netherlands, as an extensive know how and knowledge pool. However, branches in China and US are established and DBC is working in a global network of various sites of DSM and academia.
? The R&D structure has been designed on the three-axis model that includes Resources, Project, and Science Management. All three parts interact together in cross-functional project teams, which also include other areas outside this model such as regulatory and marketing. The competences within DBC cover a wide range from molecular biology, system biology, synthetic biology, and bioprocess research to applied biochemistry and microbiology, as well as bioinformatics and analytical sciences used in biotechnology.
? Research must be highly innovative and is focussed on the area of process application as well as on product innovation to contribute to the competitiveness and growth of the business in a strongly competitive environment. To stay cost competitive a sound understanding of microbiology, fermentation and bioprocess technology regarding our products and their application is crucial. A scientific record of accomplishment and scientific network in the field of microbiology and/or fermentation, preferably in producing enzymes and/or metabolites, combined with experiences in industrial R&D are crucial for differentiation.

? Is accountable to (senior) scientist for to meet the objectives of the project plan.
? Build-up specialist knowledge in Fermentation and Downstream processing (area of expertise). Integrate, apply and develop it in respective innovation projects;
? Tasks
? Perform research work conforming to QESH regulations and feed scientific data, findings and interpretations into the project. Identify bottlenecks and indicate solutions.
? Indicate prospects of obtaining a patent and assist in the preparation of regulatory submissions and contribute the required scientific documents.
? Plan and monitor one’s own work within the project plan.
? Stay abreast of new developments in the area of expertise and advise on applicability in business group processes
? Authorities
? Acquire and assess information about the business context of the project.
? Have access to required information and resources from other primary process functions and consult third parties within discipline (other business groups, vendors of assets, service providers).
? Complexity of the job
? The IBP Shanghai team will be expected to conduct project contributions for process and product innovation mainly on topics relevant to DFS, DSP and other bio-based demands. This can include basic research work, product application as well as process optimisation and production support.
? The job holder must be capable of executing experiments in the lab independently with good quality and time management.
? The job holder should be capable of participating in integrated project teams, involving team members from European sites and from other disciplines
? The job holder should show initiative and thrive from significant responsibility as well as ownership of lab work. Good communication skills and team player capabilities are therefore mandatory.
The Ideal
? The job holder will have 1-6 years’ experience in bio-process or downstream processing development.
? Masers in the field of Fermentation, Biochemical Engineering, or Bio-process technology (or equivalent qualification),
? Fluency in Mandarin and English
? Good communication and interpersonal skills
? Solid lab experience
? Industrial experience on bioprocessing
