R&D Senior Engineer (or R&D Engineer)

Electrical engineer, R&D (Senior) Engineer as development team member with a technically leading function within his domain and responsibility for work packages within the project(s) he/she is working for.

Challenges

· Understanding the overall system and related customer needs, from fleet ownership, operation to maintenance and relating it to detail design requirements.

· Integration of power electronic converters, auxiliary devices and automation equipment into an electro-mechanical solution for high power e-vehicle charging applications.

· Reliable prediction of solution costs, performance and functional parameters, EMC compliance.

· Innovation, efficiency and effectivity demands in a dynamic, cross functional environment around an ABB internal (PG, BU, cross BU) and if needed external R&D teams.

· Diversity of tasks requires a high versatility and flexibility. Navigation in an environment of uncertainty, working out solution alternatives to derive solid facts based decisions.

· Generic, modular design thinking to meet a broad range of changing customer needs.

· Direct integration of results in the operational processes of the executing unit.

· Finding the right method / process is part of the task in a partly lean / agile environment.

Education, experience

· Bachelor in electrical engineering with 6 years of experience or Master with at least 4 years of experience in a technical role in electrical systems like drives, chargers, UPS.

· Proven experience in integrating power electronic converters or similar, power system topology implications, high current low or medium voltage applications.

· Demonstrated understanding of safety requirements in the context of electrical systems.

· Proactive and effective communicator.

· High degree of intercultural awareness.

· Proficient in English written/oral

· Readiness to travel 20-40%

As an advantage:

· Expertise on application of batteries and choice of battery technology

· Experience in Traction Chain or Variable Speed Drives applications

· Profound understanding of other engineering disciplines (e.g. thermal design/cooling, PLC, HMI, fieldbus, SCADA, UMTS, Cyber Secu, RFID, LAN/WAN…)

· Production or field service experience with similar products

· Deep understanding of lean product development methodologies

· Experience in test plan, lab testing withhigh current (1kA), LV DC protection (1kVdc) & EMC.

· IEC standard & IEC certifications

· Good understanding of mechanical requirements (IPxx rating, IK rating, noise level…)

Typical tasks

· Technical planning with project team, lead interdisciplinary engineers technically.

· Derive technical requirements, concepts and designs from market requirements.

· Problem formulation, analysis, inception of different solution options

· Information research, calculation and simulation based evaluation of design alternatives

· Consensus building on technical level, always considering overall project constraints

· Validation of results, quality and compliance to spec for delegated work

· Planning, establishment and conduction of system and sub-system tests as test leader

· Project documentation, procedures & tools (technical content)

· Support roll-out, collect feedback and resolve issues

· Cost optimal high-quality design in direct collaboration with ABB research, technology providers and SCM and external suppliers

· Coaching of colleagues

· Participation to customers & suppliers F2F meeting (travelling)

· Strong support for pilot project definition & negotiation

· Used to work with decentralized & multicultural teams working in different time zones
