The Composites Application Development Engineer is accountable for converting construction, industrial, wind, aerospace, ballistics and other applicable market requirements into composite solutions. This role interacts with key players in the market to translate customer needs and identify opportunities to grow the use of composites and OC reinforcement solutions. The Application Development Engineer works closely with Manufacturing, Science and Technology, Sourcing, and Marketing organizations internally and builds relationships with universities and other organizations/labs in the market. Additionally, the incumbent will be expected to partner with other material suppliers (resin, core, etc) and manufacturers on innovative programs to overall grow the composite applications.

The successful candidate must be capable of understanding material systems, fiber reinforcements, technical fabrics, composite mechanics, modeling and processes. Good experience with composites modeling is needed.

This position will be located at Owens Corning China Composites Center

The position reports to the China Composites Application Development Manager

1. Demonstrates a commitment to safety

2. Understand and satisfy customer needs

· Continuously build knowledge of key customers, their business, products, technologies, applications, competitors, codes & standards, etc. - what is necessary for the customer to be successful, and the value that our current and future products deliver to the customer in solving their problems.

· Document and communicate customer specifications and Fitness for Use criteria with input and direction from the Market Development Manager, Product Manager and Sales team.

· Provide technical expertise to help our customers take cost out or enhance their products

· Lead communications on how products are made, used, bring benefits and troubleshoot typical issues and questions

· Lead and organize Customer meetings and initiate projects that result in improved customer satisfaction

• Number of new product ideas that enter the Stage Gate process
• Revenue from new products

3. Promote existing products to fulfill customer needs

· Understand customers fitness for use related to specifications, procedures, and products and partner with the international team of product development experts to build solutions

· Understand competitive threats through active collection and analysis of competitive products

· Drive application development based on a strong understanding of local trends

· Implement appropriate testing/standards to meet quality and consistency requirements of our customers

· Implement and follow process changes with regards to OC's supply chain, customer service, and production requirements

· Work with Product Stewardship team to identify and address issues

4. Execute project leadership on programs

· Lead projects from concept through to commercialization, for large cross-functional teams, and ensuring consistent alignment with the business strategy throughout the project. Projects to be managed through the use of the Solution Development Stage Gate process.

· Provide innovative solutions and solve problems through engineering and scientific fundamentals.

· Demonstrate the ability to develop and meet key milestones, to work and communicate effectively with people at all levels within the organization, and to technically lead the development of solutions.

• On-time and on-budget project delivery
• Implementation of all project deliverables in alignment with customer and business requirements and any approved scope changes

Experience and Knowledge Requirements:

• PhD in Scientific or Engineering Degree is preferred
• Knowledge and experience with fiber or fabric reinforcements for industrial applications is preferred
• Training & practice on structural modeling (FEA) of composites or technical fabric design is a must
• Understanding of composite processes, e.g. vacuum infusion, filament winding, Pultrusion, or RTM, etc. is a plus
• Knowledge and experience in TS/TP resins is a plus
• Must be able to establish good contacts with key players in the industry.
• Must know who is who within the industry, good knowledge of composites technologies, industry trends/drivers.
