Job Title: Senior Scientist – Process Research and production support
Reports to: Principal scientist/R&D Director
Location: Shanghai


The Challenge:
1. To conduct chemical process research and development including reaction process and separation process at the development phase of R&D projects as well as the implementation phase.
2. Set up the connection of process research needs (process design and evaluation, safety assessment, simulation) between local R&D and the expertise within DSM.
3. Make active use of DSM best practices.
4. Take SHE ownership for self and coworkers.
5. Keep all relevant business and technical information as well as trade secrets secure from non-DSM parties. Act compliant with the competition law.

Job Purpose:
1. To apply specialist knowledge and expertise with regard to synthetic technologies and process optimization and to develop, integrate and apply it in R&D innovation projects and other research activities within the DNP China Research Center operations.
2. To contribute to process innovation for vitamins and new nutritional ingredients.
3. To contribute to process development/evaluation for scaling up.
4. To contribute to production trouble shooting and if necessarily, scaling down.
5. To contribute to tech transfer to DNP production sites in China.
6. To contribute to the generation of new expertise and new concepts.


The Position:
1. Chemistry expertise in R&D function:
1) Maintain specialist knowledge in new process development, process optimization and chemical engineering (area of expertise). Integrate, apply and develop it in order to develop new process for existing or new products, solve problems in projects and the plant support
2) Stay abreast of new developments in the area of expertise and advise on applicability in business group processes.
3) Evaluate new ideas and support the initiation of R&D proposals and projects in order to contribute to innovations and new concepts in the area of expertise.
4) Execute the agreed research programs / experiments, evaluate it and report the results. Plan and organize execution of research activities in the field of responsibility aligned with R&D Director.
5) Participate in assigned R&D project(s), in which the specific area of expertise has to be applied.
6) Support and contribute registration and patent filing in the field of expertise.
7) Participate in publishing scientific publications / presentations; participate at scientific conferences and costumer events according to the need of the research activities. Keep up-to date with scientific literature.
8) Establish and maintain an internal and external network in the area of expertise.
9) Comply with Safety Health Environmental and Quality (SHEQ) and other legal requirements.
10) Deep understanding of the processes and plant setup of different products in DNP China production sites.
11) Provide guidance and coaching to operators, technicians, scientists.
2. Engineering function in production support function:
1) Build up the overall knowledge on the processes for all DNP production sites in China including downstream, business trip or short-term period working at plant is required,
2) Repeat/scaling down the plant process at SHA lab in safe and efficiency way, faster response to the plant requirement,
3) Regularly attend the plant technical discussion to obtain the insight of plant status and improvement possibilities,
4) Transfer the lab results to production site in safe and efficiency way,
5) Build up efficient communication with production site in China and M&T teams in headquarter,
6) Provide guidance and coaching to operators, engineer to enhance the chemical understanding and the improvements implementation.


The Ideal:
1. The job holder shall have 2-5 years experiences of organic chemistry, synthesis and process research and development in an industrial R&D context or in manufacture technology team.
2. The job holder shall have overall technical understanding of production process and process unit operation.
3. The job holder shall provide process expertise input and deliver a cost effective/scalable process.
1) The Job hold will be expected to conduct organic chemistry reaction, prepare chemical intermediates and new nutritional products.
2) Structural identification and analysis of reaction side products and impurities with assistance from analytical teams will be required.
3) The job holder must be capable of participating in integrated project teams, involving team members from European sites and from other disciplines
4) The job holder must have the ability to apply and develop new synthetic methodologies.
5) The job holder shall be familiar with modern analytical approaches applied for process development.
6) The Job holder must prove his/her experience in supporting technical scale-down, scale-up and related piloting or demonstration plant development experience.
7) The Job holder should familiar with engineering concept and philosophy to tightly work with plant or operation engineering team.
4. PhD with 3-5 year working experience or Master with 5-10 year working experience in organic chemistry, process technology and fine chemicals (or equivalent qualification).
5. Good communication and interpersonal skills.
6. The holder must be fluent in Mandarin and English. Knowledge of German would be an advantage.
7. Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience of modern synthetic methodologies and techniques.
8. Experience in process chemistry and real industrial level production would be an advantage.
