Job Description

You are an experienced magazine designer/art editor with at least five years’ experience, and you are looking for your next challenge. As part of RBI’s Global Production team, you will be responsible for supervising the China-based design team. You will be actively involved in the design and layout of pages for market-leading, international magazine brands. As well as working on printed magazines you may also be expected to oversee the design of digital magazines and digital platforms so that magazines can be viewed on tablets and smartphones. Some overseas travel may be required.

Duties and responsibilities

The smooth day-to-day running of the design process:

Managing the China-based design team in Guangzhou

Liaising with the teams in London, Singapore and Houston on a daily basis

Nurture the design skills within the team

Laying out pages for the magazines, often to tight deadlines

Discussing design and layout ideas with the editor and other colleagues

Choosing the best images to use either from supplied or stock library photography

Ensuring that the art elements of the magazine are delivered on time and within budget

Adhere to the design house style on all pages

Help to implement any required changes on workflow and layout, and resolve any production issues in line with overall business objectives

Drafting rough sketches of the cover design for discussion, then producing the final layout

Key skills

Experience of managing a team

Excellent English language skills – verbal and written

A strong communicator, able to brief others clearly on what is needed

Expert with Adobe InDesign. Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop is a bonus

Creative, with a highly-developed visual sense

Confident in presenting ideas

Interested in magazine trends and graphic design

Attentive to detail

Good at working in a team

Well organised

Unfazed by criticism

Cool and effective under pressure

Self-starter with proven initiative

Capable of generating creative ideas and innovating across all products

Reporting to the Global Art Editor in London
