Scope of Role
We are looking for a ‘master’ in Qualitative Consultancy with more than ten years of market research experience - someone who understands the real business and marketing issues our clients face and can partner with them to create the solutions.
Ideally, the candidate will also have in-depth experience in the brand development and strategy arena. His or her clients often see the importance of taking insights into marketing and branding decision-making and prefer to commission work to those who can work as a bridge between the two – rather than appointing two separate agencies to do such work.
We are therefore open to either someone who has a proven and broad record in Market/ Segmentation, Communications, Brand Positioning/ Equity/ Strategy and Innovation/ New Product Development or a specialist who focuses in one of these four areas. Experience in taking insights into strategy is also important as more and more of our work will now be moving towards this area.
A ‘normal’ or ‘conventional’ appointee would see 60% of his or her time directly related to Qualitative methodologies and growing existing clients - with the remainder being spent acquiring new businesses – by spearheading independently or collaborating with our other offer leaders – especially in Brand Development and Cultural Insight but also Quantitative Research.
Naturally, the successful candidate will need to be more a ‘strategic” researcher as opposed to one who is more “traditional” or “tactical”. Greater China experience is an important criterion, and he or she needs to be well-known and respected within the industry and in China – with experience and determination in accomplishing our many objectives – external/ business as well as internal/ operational.
The ability to speak Mandarin/ Chinese is mandatory – given the Greater China market.

Key Challenges & Opportunities:
Playing a senior role in our regional Qualitative team, he or she will be instrumental in helping to inspire, create and deliver what our clients truly value: marketing inspiration.

– Leading or co-leading the qualitative division in China.

– Heading up a range of projects, managing and developing the project and account teams independently

– Taking an active interest and demonstrating a good understanding of clients’ broader business and marketing-led issues and challenges - using this knowledge to help leverage


New projects

– Owning and farming clients across the breadth of the AV offer; primarily focused on farming existing clients but also spending considerable amount of time bringing in new business from new clients

– Cross-selling across the different offer streams to ensure clients benefit from the best of our expertise and our business grows organically through new business outside the current scope of work with the clients

– Delivering a Revenue and Gross Margin target (set annually on an individual basis).
– Managing all client business efficiently - ensuring agreed profit targets are hit and seeking opportunities to improve profitability for the business

– Being the Qualitative Thought Leader for the region and a member of the Global Thought Leadership team - responsible for refreshing our Qualitative offer and collaborating with other global team members.

– As a key stakeholder in our People Development programme, he or she will be responsible for managing and developing career development opportunities for his or her team - coaching and mentoring as well as being involved in recruitment and retention activities and decisions up to the Account Director level.

The ideal profile:
– Creativity and critical thinking: a highly creative conceptual thinker with a passion for delivering engaging and cutting edge solutions as part of a close and highly experienced team that loves a challenge.

– Creative selling skills: Able to respond with creativity to complex client briefs and develop an appropriate and inspiring written proposal

– Rich experience: with ten or more years of experience from either the client or the agency side - showing a solid understanding and expertise in a broad range of Qualitative methodologies and analytical frameworks - including skilled moderation and the applications of advanced projective and ethnographic techniques and approaches.

– Rigorous analysis: Able to consistently demonstrate at an advanced level critical thinking and marketing-led analytical abilities - dealing with some of the most demanding clients in the region. The ability to inject confidence right from the start is critical, and clients should soon gain confidence in his or her team in the short and medium term.

– Commercial Acumen: Demonstrate a solid commercial business vision in order to become real business partners with clients

– Strategic Orientation: Can apply a broad knowledge base to provoke client thinking beyond narrow brand/ category parameters

– Client Organization Savvy: Can navigate confidently across marketing and insight functions in large client organizations

– Senior Client Handling Skills - Able to create any written presentations related to owned projects, delivering additional gravitas to more hierarchical/ tricky client situations

– Fascination for people: an irresistible desire to understand people’s motivations, desires, hopes, fears and dreams


– A compulsive deep diver: naturally nosy, with a love for going beyond the obvious and the mental agility to look for the best solutions from multiple perspectives

– Brand fanatic: with a real passion for and understanding of the role brands play in people’s lives and the ability to translate this into action

– Clear communicator: confidence to deliver findings in an engaging and impactful way so that these are immediately actionable and will live on in client organization for a long time to come

– Strong team spirit: thrives on working as part of an enthusiastic and energetic team, inspiring others and keen to learn new skills from other disciplines to drive thinking further

– Intrepid outlook: have sought to broaden their horizons via work, social or personal exploits, showing true grit and a desire to push themselves outside of their comfort zone.

– Active in the wider marketing world: well connected to latest thinking in the research and marketing worlds and always seeking inspiration from other knowledge sources
