Mission Summary:
iRobot is seeking an Associate Mechanical Engineer to help us design mechanical systems and subsystems for our state-of-the-art consumer robots.
In this position you will be a key part of the Mechanical Engineering organization. You will work as part of a team of mechanical engineers in close collaboration with other engineering disciplines and team members from partner organizations such as User Experience, Industrial Design, Product Marketing, Manufacturing Operations, and more, in an exciting, fast-paced environment.

As an iRobot associate mechanical engineer you will be part of a product development team and will enjoy a wide variety of roles and responsibilities. You work within a team of experienced mechanical engineers and gain expertise in product development for high volume manufacturing, use of plastics and commodity materials, engineering analysis, and global manufacturing.

Essential Functions/Job Duties
Analyze, research, and resolve technical issues in creating a product that meets functional and aesthetic requirements
Design innovative components and mechanisms that are manufacturable and technically and functionally robust
Critically assess detailed mechanical designs, product definition, systems test and data analysis
Verify and validate design solutions utilizing rapid prototyping and conventional prototyping methodologies
Generate mechanical layouts and detailed part design using 3-D CAD and analysis tools
Identify, manage, and mitigate product and technical risks
Integrate seamlessly across engineering and business disciplines: systems, software, electrical, operations, quality, product management, and industrial design throughout product life cycle
Utilize statistical tolerance analysis to ensure proper fit and function.
Participate in cross-functional design reviews.
Complete thorough documentation and archiving in the PDM system.
Help manage the details of transition to manufacturing including resolution of first article inspections and assembly issues.
Initiate and processes engineering change requests as needed.
To Be Successful You Will Have
Qualifications:
BS in Mechanical Engineering
Relevant professional experience in an engineering environment
Experience in designing plastic and metal parts, collecting and analyzing test data
Understanding of design fundamentals and first principle analytical methods
CAD skillset (PTC Creo preferred)
Product Data Management (PDM) familiarization (PTC Windchill, preferred)
Evident communication and organizational skills
Fluency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
Other desirable areas of capability:
ASME drafting standards, dimensional management methods and GD&T
Experience with use of CAE tools for virtual design iteration (structural, dynamic, thermal and fluids)
Design for Manufacturability, Assembly, Serviceability, Recyclability
Material selection, especially with plastics
Design mock-up and rapid prototyping methods, such as Objet, 3D printing, FDM, machine shop usage
Statistics, including Six Sigma, reliability engineering, DOE, comparison testing, Cp, Cpk,
Structured problem-solving methods, including 8D, is/is-not, fault-tree and “fish-bone” analysis
Experience in any of the following:
Consumer product design
Small mechanism design – using motors, gears, bearings, wheels, linkages, etc.
Fluid flow design – fans, pumps, tubes, CFD methods
Optics, light piping, light sensors and infrared light management
Sensor systems, including rotational encoders, sonar, inertial, laser, vision
Battery-powered portable vacuum cleaning systems
