EXPECTED VACANCIES

The Department of Home Affairs (HA) section of the Australian Consulate-General Guangzhou is looking at establishing an order of merit for the following positions. The order of merit will be established to fill any short or long-term vacancies that may arise in the next twelve months.

Visa Processing Officer – Permanent Entry Unit (PEU)


Applications are invited from Chinese Nationals, Australian Nationals and holders of diplomatic visas. If the successful applicants are Chinese Nationals, they are required to register with the Service Office of Foreign Establishments, Guangdong Province (if not already) prior to commencing employment.

Salary for the positions will commence at RMB 7,299 (LE3) per month. We also offer competitive conditions including 20-day annual leave entitlement in pro rata, 14-day public holidays, commericial medical insurance plan and flexible working policy.
The expected vacancies will be available for an initial contract term of 6 months or 12 months. The successful applicants may be offered a further contract and a subsequent permanent contract depending on operational requirement.

About the positions



Visa Processing Officer – Permanent Entry Unit (PEU)

Visa Processing Officers (VPO) work under the direction of a Team Leader and are responsible for delivering client service and assessing and/or deciding on the outcome of permanent visa applications where appropriate. This position also works closely with Senior Migration Officers to assess Citizenship by Descent applications lodged on behalf of children born overseas to Australian citizens in accordance with the Australian Citizenship Act 2007.
The key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Process visa applications in accordance with the relevant legislation, policies and procedures

Assess Child and Adoption permanent visa applications, New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship visa applications, and conduct the initial assessments of low risk Partner Migration applications within service standards

Register and assess Citizenship by Descent applications, making recommendations to Australian-based officers for decision, escalating sensitive cases at an early stage as appropriate

Assist in client liaison on Citizenship By Descent matters including the preparation of routine correspondence; coordination of DNA testing; assistance with client interviews and the translation or interpretation of documents

Respond to routine client enquiries made by phone, email and at the counter, providing information and escalate more sensitive and complex matters as required

Decide temporary entry visa applications, as required but particularly during peak processing periods

Conduct interpretation and document translation as required

Provide mentoring and on-the-job training to other staff as required

Undertake general administrative support for the Permanent Entry Unit as required



Generic Skill Requirement for the Position

Good written and oral English language skills and fluency in Mandarin, including an ability to interpret and translate in both languages for operational purposes. Fluency in Cantonese is highly desirable.

Sound communication and interpersonal skills and capacity to respond professionally and sensitively to internal and external stakeholders in the delivery of client service and visa decision-making.

Ability to work independently as well as under direction, and to maintain high work standards, a high degree of integrity and meet deadlines.

Ability to make assessments and decisions based on legal requirements incorporating initiative and sound judgement

Ability to support and provide training to less experienced or lower level staff, as required.

Ability to maintain productive working relationships with colleagues from a diverse range of backgrounds.
