Preschool – 4 year olds
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Homeroom teacher with full time Teacher Assistant
CLASS SIZE
16-student is the preferred size for Preschool 3
18-student is the preferred size for Preschool 4
DAILY SCHEDULE
Approximately seven 40-minute periods of an eight period day
REQUIRED WEEKLY MEETING TIME
Two common planning periods per week: one with the PYP Coordinator and one
with the Preschool Team.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
2 out of 3 After School Activities (paid), recess and bus duty as scheduled, and
outdoor duties with preschool children.
TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES
Preschool teachers are responsible for teaching and assessing all subject areas,
including social, emotional and physical development. Library and IT are not
specials and teachers attend these classes in collaboration with the specialist
teacher. Preschool students also attend Music, Library and Physical Education
class.
AISG implements the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International
Baccalaureate, and is a Reggio-Inspired, PYP play-based program. The learning
objectives are taken from the Creative Curriculum for Preschool. Familiarity with
these programs is desired.
? Inquiry, play-based based learning is the main method of instruction and
learning at School. Preschool teachers are responsible for teaching four out of
six units of inquiry each year in the PYP. The cognitive and social
development of children is best encouraged through collaboration with
others, discussion, discovery of “how” and “why” of actions. Spontaneous
play is a natural way for young children to learn to interact with one another
and to understand their environment. Teachers are expected to maintain a
balanced approach between student-initiated and teacher-directed
inquiry based learning.
? AISG teachers implement the Reader’s and Writer’s workshop model to
guide students through the literacy process. Students in Preschool focus on
the development of language foundations (speaking listening and
developmentally appropriate phonics).
? Differentiation throughout the preschool program using a variety of
strategies to meet the needs of all students is expected. EAL is not offered in
preschool and many students will have limited English ability.
? Teachers will be responsible for assessing students’ academic, social,
emotional and physical growth based upon the criteria from the Creative
Curriculum. Anecdotal records and check lists are the preferred methods.
Creative Curriculum uses exploration and discovery as a way of learning
through play. It enables children to develop confidence and creativity
within six focus areas (Social-Emotion, Physical, Language, Cognitive,
Literacy and Math) and incorporates these areas throughout every part of
every day. Records of student progress and achievement using teacher
observations, formative and summative assessments and documented
student work must be maintained throughout the year. Preschool teachers
use iPads and Seesaw to help document student work and play.
? Teachers will maintain open and clear communication with parents
regarding student progress on a regular basis. Teachers and/or parents can
schedule meetings any time during the school year. Formal reporting occurs
two times a year, in both December and June. Parent-teacher conferences
take place in August (a get to know your conversation)and October.
Student-Led Conferences occur in March.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
？ Bachelor’s degree or higher; teaching certification valued;
？ Minimum of 2 years of successful full-time teaching experience;
TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS
Our school operates a 1:1 laptop program from grade 6-12 and 2:1 iPad from
preschool to grade 2. Grade 3-5 is 1:1 iPad program. Familiarity with Office365,
Atlas Rubicon, SeeSaw, Word-Press and Veracross is preferred.
