Essential Responsibilities

The Material & Processes Engineer is part of the Rod Lift Systems Engineering team and supports primarily the Design Engineers and Sourcing Department as well as Manufacturing, Service and customer, at need, by providing guidance to the teams in all material/metallurgy related areas and in the troubleshooting of day to day operations in the field of materials, special processes, qualifications, non-destructive testing, failures analysis, coating, residual life assessment (RLA) and repair technology.
In particular, the Material and Process Engineer has the following responsibilities:
• Leverage materials knowledge and experience from all O&G products to improve specific products and applications internally and at vendor site;
• Support the O&G products development with particular emphasis on NPI and new vendor and process development and work together with the sustaining engineering department to promote continuous improvement initiatives on the product line;
• Performs autonomously surveillance audits of lab and vendors facilities;
• Qualify, support and visit suppliers and sub suppliers according to GE qualification procedures: determines if parts meet specifications; notifies production operators and supervisors and SQE team of inspection results that fail to meet specifications or improvement actions that can be taken;
• Manage and dispose Supplier Deviation Requests (SDR’s) on material application (process deviation acceptance, process defects, material substitution approval);
• The position requires specific knowledge and experience or capability with training with regards to metallographic inspection (inclusion, grain size, chemical testing), as well as specific knowledge regarding a wide variety of special processes. These should include, welding, heat treating, coatings, raw material forging and casting, and non-destructive testing;
• Support Engineering Department in customer/vendor visits, meetings, or presentations;
• Perform metallurgical and metrological inspections of components and conducts parts inspections using engineering test procedures;
• Develop material specifications as required to support and meet customer/vendor and GE standards;
• Work with cross functional teams developing heat treatment, welding, or other processes to achieve desired material properties or characteristics at the vendor site;
• Analyze components either returned from industrial/aftermarket customers or after completion of internal testing and Interpreting failure data and tests to identify materials issues. Able to dialogue with labs or testing institution in specification of analysis, reporting and processing of results.
• Propose and promote synergy and cooperation with other GE businesses;
• Understand and comply with all Safety and Environmental requirements.

Qualifications/Requirements 

Degree of Material Science or Metallurgical Engineering (or other Engineering or Material Science degrees based on the experience gained on the job);
Significant work experience on the field (8 or 8+ years of experience);
Deep knowledge of Metal Science and Metallurgy;
Deep knowledge of special processes such as casting, forging, and possibly painting to support localization efforts;
Substantial metallurgical engineering experience in manufacturing operations and of material manufacturability processes;
Metallurgy, Mechanical property of materials (fatigue, fracture mechanics, creep, etc...);
Fluent English, spoken and written, colloquial and technical;
Familiarity with computer operating system Windows and software package Office;
Familiar in International and Chinese Applicable Standards Specification like EN, ASME, ASTM, GB, API etc.

Desired Characteristics

• Skills of mechanical testing, painting process and failure analysis process;
• Laboratory work experience at metal material property;
• Familiar in Design of Experiment approach;
• Extensive knowledge of or capability to quickly learn alloy steels, heat treatment, hardenability, weldability and other related processes.
• Open mind;
• Sound analytical and problem solving skills. Ability to work on own initiative.
• Proven ability to execute multiple jobs simultaneously, interdisciplinary and boundary less approach;
• Able to perform job under stress;
• Availability to travel;
• Team working-oriented personality;
• Strong communication & interpersonal skills. Candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical issues to personnel with our client and the supply base. The individual must be able to work in a self-directed team environment.
