Manager (or Senior Manager)
L’Oreal R&I China / Skincare / Pre-development Whitening and UV protection categories
SUMMARY
This position is responsible for managing the pre-development programs of Whitening and UV protection categories within the Skincare group. The Manager manages a team of professionals that execute formulation projects, and interacts extensively with the various R&I teams globally, including but not limited to Evaluation, Consumer & Market Insights, Packaging, Regulatory, Microbiology, Applied and Advanced Research, and Senior Management. The Manager is responsible for projects from definition (transforming consumer insights/needs into projects) to proof of Performance to transfer to Development labs. He/She drives accountability at every stage of the pre-development project life cycle.
REPORTING – Reports to the Director of Pre-Development, Skincare, L’Oreal R&I China
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
PROJECTS
1. Manage all pre-dev programs for the L’Oreal Skincare R&I group based Shanghai (China) related to Whitening and UV protection categories, in line with the L’Oreal R&I China innovation strategy and Global innovation strategy of each category.
2. Proposes creative ideas or scientific concepts based on consumer insights; Translates consumer/market insights into outstanding product performance goals.
3. Create new technologies and products to maximize perceived performance ; Suggest cross-disciplinary innovation strategies within organization
4. Translate science and projects into consumer performance verbiage to promote and share new technologies with Management and with other R&I hubs
5. Ensure that proper evaluation plans are developed and implemented to demonstrate performance of new technologies.
6. LAB / PEOPLE MANAGEMENT
7. Supervise laboratory operations to ensure the prompt availability of quality products that are safe and effective.
8. Manage a team of 10, including lab scientists and managers.
9. Recruit, develop and manage teams; ensure the development of know-how and expertise and contribute to organizational development
10. Tracks program KPIs (schedule, product cost targets, efficacy goals etc.) and ensures compliance with project management tools.
11. Effectively works with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment throughout the organization, supporting the overall goals of each project.
12. Manage projects budgets.
REQUIREMENTS
1. MS degree in chemistry, engineering or related scientific field (pHD is a +)
2. 10+ years’ experience in personal care formulation / product development or personal care raw materials
3. 5+ years’ experience in people management
4. Excellent interpersonal/communications and presentation skills
5. Acts / Leads with human sensitivity
6. Displays sensitivity to personal care
7. Entrepreneurial spirit
8. Ability to lead, influence, create and work within cross-functional and cross-cultural global team environments to ensure collective performance ; Manages complexity
9. Assertive, take-charge, proven manager with a strong results orientation, positive “can do” attitude and a sense of urgency to get things done
