Senior Product Development Engineer
General Purpose
Under minimal supervision, applies engineering principles and technical concepts to project assignments in support of business objectives and provides engineering guidance and expertise. Solves technical problems, conducts feasibility studies and interprets engineering criteria and technical specifications. Performs technical and cost analyses to develop concept options, solve technical problems or provide technical recommendations for structures, systems and components. Applies knowledge of other disciplines in solving complex problems. Emphasis will be placed on team participation, ability to plan, and ability to achieve results on assigned projects.
Essential Functions
° Independently develops and applies engineering approaches to projects/assignments.
° Completes broad assignments, using originality and ingenuity.
° Reviews and recommends processes and operations that involve complex engineering applications.
° Regularly serves as technical representative for Herman Miller in area of expertise.
° Will participate in cross-functional project teams as a technical engineering expert.
° Applies sound project management and engineering principles. May develop and manage project schedules, expenses and other resources assigned to bring the project in on time and within budget.
° Provide leadership and insight into new engineering concepts and technologies, and new supply chain opportunities in China.
° Support multiple projects in various phases simultaneously.
° Performs additional responsibilities as requested to achieve business objectives.
Minimum Requirements
° Bachelor's degree in Engineering or two years college in scientific/technical field plus 8-10 years' experience as a top performer.
° Three to five year professional engineering experience with proven competency in achieving results.
° Project management experience may be essential for some assignments
° Must be able to communicate effectively with people at various levels including operations, engineering, technical services, suppliers and management and to be able to work well with and develop a partnering relationship with other team members.
° Knowledgeable in the use of common office automation, communication, software and tools, and engineering related software.
° Must be a skilled problem solver and be able to apply engineering expertise to problem solving.
° Must be able to assess priorities and determine course of action with minimal day-to-day supervision and be able to anticipate, recognize, and respond effectively to changes which affect project plans.
° Must have an overall business sense and understand how decisions impact business results.
° Must be able to perform all essential job functions with or without accommodation.
Additional Essential Functions
° Interprets and translates product design concepts into engineering specifications for products that can be tooled, manufactured and assembled to meet project objectives for performance, quality, durability and cost.
° Creates and maintains thorough product specifications following HMI standards and guidelines.
° Follows HMI processes, procedures and guidelines for assigned product development tasks and activities
° Regularly applies and documents good problem solving techniques and tools to work assignments. Demonstrates continuous improvement in problem solving capabilities and skills.
° Provides input into the development of product requirements, build objectives and quality criteria, and directly communicates this information to manufacturing suppliers and internal operations.
° Performs and/or interprets varied engineering analyses, results and documents using appropriate engineering tools and engineering skills - including finite element analysis, free body diagrams, spreadsheets, 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, 2D sketches, Performance Requirements, Test Requests, Codes and Standards, test reports, PPAP, FVP&R, DFM, DFA, Mold flow analysis, tolerance analysis and other relevant technical documents.
° Meets regularly with project teams in North America and Europe, and communicates engineering, technical and business information effectively using multiple communications technologies and tools.
° Manages and conducts prototype builds, product evaluations and testing for various project team activities as requested.
° Meets regularly with Asian suppliers and HMI China operations to identify and resolve product problems, assist with coordinating project activities, assist with technical translations and communications.
Additional Requirements
° At least five years of professional engineering experience, must be in product development (developing new products from concept thru implementation.)
° Native proficiency with Mandarin language (code 5), Minimum professional proficiency with English language (code 3) as defined by US State Department guidelines
° Must be able to perform on-going work assignment in the Dongguan China, Ningbo China and Hong Kong China locations.
° Demonstrated understanding of the materials types, material properties, manufacturing processes and tooling associated with various engineering materials, including wood, aluminum, plastic, steel, etc.
° Demonstrated proficiency in Creo 3D modeling and Windchill PDMLink data management processes
° Demonstrated ability to interpret engineering specification drawings including Geometric, Dimensioning & Tolerance (GD&T) per ASME 14.5 (1994)
° Well developed organizational, project management skills and analytical skills with attention to detail.
° Demonstrated ability to work equally as team member or independently with minimal supervision
° Demonstrated initiative and a self-starting orientation.
° Strong work ethic and personal ownership in work quality and performance
° Ability to influence without positional authority both external and internal partners.
° Must demonstrate scheduling flexibility and ability to travel internationally up to 20% and locally in China up to 20% of the time. Initial job assignment will be in Michigan for a minimum 12 weeks for organizational training, technical training and project integration.
° Candidate with less experience can be considered as Engineer or Technician.
