Summary

The  of Government Relations will be tasked with acting as a safety advocate to influencers in relative authority. Together, with the Kidde executive and product management team, the  Manager of GR will be responsible for co-developing a state, local, and federal legislation strategy with the objective of increasing safety standards in order to save lives.  The core activities of the Manager will be to lead in the execution of this strategy as measured by legislative actions taken, integration and collaboration and influence with trade associations and government bodies, and proactive communication to the Kidde executive and product marketing team. The candidate must be a natural leader and have a deep understanding and enjoyment for educating influencers on the topic of fire safety and protection.

 

Area of Expertise:

Understanding of and experience with the creation and implementation of state/federal codes as it relates to fire safety products.

Experience creating a short/long term legislation strategy as aligned with the needs of the business.

Engagement with product management and sales to ensure alignment between the needs of our customer base and the business to applicable federal and state government contracting laws and regulations.

Understanding of the impact of and alignment with various non-government/government stakeholders such as UL, ETL, NHTSA, CPSC, etc.

A strong understanding of federal/state residential fire codes in order to appropriately engaged with product management and engineering regarding audits and reviews of internal controls, policies, procedures, and processes with the intent of ensuring compliance with applicable U.S. government contracting laws and regulations. 

Planning, direction, and performance of lobbying and education of influencing entities and individuals while maintaining full compliance with applicable U.S. government contracting laws and regulations and Carrier Corporation policies on contracting with the U.S. Government. Includes compliance.

 

Typical Roles/Area of Focus:

Incumbent’s responsibilities will generally focus on one or more of the following:

Building Codes and Standards as related to residential fire safety

Legislation strategy creation / execution with cross functional teams

Engagement with state and federal government contacts and agencies in order to understand and educate on the needs of fire safety that are in the best interest of consumers

Deep understanding of and full compliance with all ethical guidelines as set forth by Carrier Corporation

 

Level of Responsibility:

Provides strategic direction for systems, projects, and programs in residential fire safety products

Contributes to the company and the industry by advancing the level of knowledge within that discipline

Provides cross-functional guidance and expertise (including engagement with executive leadership, product management, and sales)

Is seen as a leading expert within their field

 

Typical Educational Requirements:

BA/BS degree w/10+ years of experience

MA/MS degree w/7+ years of experience

PhD degree w/4+ years of experience

The incumbent is responsible for complying with UTC’s “Code of Ethics,” the “Policy Statement on Business Ethics and Conduct in Contracting with the U.S. Government,” and related policies. In executing his/her responsibilities, incumbent shall take all steps necessary to foster open communications and to support UTC’s compliance, business practices, DIALOG, and Ombudsman programs.

 

Requirements

Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken formats

Superb problem-solving skills and possess good organizational skills

Established as a leader; specifically with proven experience in government affairs

Demonstrated understanding of fire safety

 

**15 years of experience in government affairs, lobbying, or other related field

**Experience in safety products preferred
