Job description
The Software Developer provides technical direction and leadership in the development of integrated system products. Decisions affect the overall success of the project and directly impact product performance, image, schedules, and customer satisfaction. In this role, team members develop high-level design documents to implement the identified components. They also ensure that the implemented components are unit tested and ready to be integrated into the product. Developers also provide fixes to defects during the software life cycle.

A successful developer must have extensive experience with the full software lifecycle, design and develop software from high-level requirements, ability to multi-task across changing priorities, great leadership and teamwork qualities, and innovative technical skills. Application developers in this role have robust hands-on experience with planning, developing, supporting, maintaining, and implementing applications on J2EE, IBM WebSphere Application Server, IBM Rational tooling, DB2/SQL database, and Linux. Experience with Service and Support, IBM Connections, Social Collaboration solutions, and web security protocols.

Application developers in Global Support Enablement:
- Evaluate user requests for new or modified applications.
- Consult with users to identify current operating procedures and clarify program objectives.
- Formulate plans outlining steps required to develop program using structured analysis and design.
- Develop, test and run programs.
- Analyze, review and alter programs to increase operating efficiency or adapt to new requirements.
- Assist users in solving operating problems.

Extensive experience in most of the following skills and attributes are required/preferred:
- PERL development skill is required;
- WAS, Rational IDE, DB2 9.x (XML Database skills) preferred;
- Java, JS and other web development scripting languages preferred;
- J2EE technologies: JSPs, Servlets preferred;
- XML, AJAX, XSLT, web technologies preferred;
- DB2, SQL preferred;
- Social Collaboration and Content Management software preferred;
- Web Security protocol preferred;
- Testing tools preferred;
- AIX and Linux preferred.

Team Specifics:
- Primary applications are HTML based applications built on WebSphere, IBM-IHS Perl CGI, Dojo, MQ-Series, DB/2, and Ruby on Rails.
- Primary development languages are Java, Javascript, and PERL.
- Scope of work encompasses multiple components, or a complex component, of a software product or solution.
- Defines, recommends, and implements software alternatives and solutions, which will achieve a high level of efficiency and customer satisfaction.
- Understands service process and how the tools are used to resolve field reported problems. Use continuous improvement.
- Significant project planning activities with immediate and extended cross-functional teams, ensuring that development is completed in a timely and cost effective manner (Agile Methodology).
- Thoroughly understands and effectively executes existing software development processes and procedures and develops new approaches as appropriate.
- Ensures accurate and thorough documentation is maintained for the project.
- Assumes additional responsibilities as assigned.
