Title: Sr.Engineer, Process

Function / Area: Product Design & Development / China


Job Summary

Under moderate supervision the process engineer will work with Soft Goods Product Development as representative of Global Engineering and Quality at our suppliers. He or she will report to the Engineering Team and will identify, evaluate, and work to resolve process, material and development issues in production and new product development. The Engineer will primarily work onsite at the supplier to review testing and change in the product during development cycle. Also, he or she will be working alongside Source Inspection and the supplier’s QC team to review and resolve any QC issues.


Roles and Responsibilities

· New Products (30%)

  • Work with Carlsbad Product Development Team to review and confirm that Final Samples, First Article and Qualification components and finished product.
  • Work with Carlsbad Product Development Team to ensure process specifications, procedures, and controls related to new products are well documented and communicated before launch.
  • Assist with creating target and limit samples as directed and confirm that all samples are available to SI before production quality inspections commence.
  • Provide input to Carlsbad Product development Team regarding processing options during the development of new products – Design for Manufacturability (DFM.)
  • Work to improve volume process capabilities in anticipation of new product requirements.
  • Provide input regarding opportunities to reduce cost for components or processes.
  • Assist with overseeing the product qualification processes, components and finished clubs and prepare qualification reports.

· Day-to-day support (30%)

  • Develop, maintain, and update manufacturing documentation with input from appropriate functions.
  • Review issues and rejects with SI team. Report back to Product Development Team as to nature of issue and path forward.
  • Evaluate and monitor process controls as supplier
  • Work with Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) as needed to ensure that equipment and processes comply with applicable codes and regulations.

· Engineering Development (20%)

  • Work with Product Engineer to develop early prototypes of components with suppliers.
  • Review processes, develop and implement testing procedures with Product Engineer for any new component or material.
  • Evaluate any new processes at suppliers to the Development Team. Break down process and possible issues that could affect quality and efficiency.
  • Evaluate potential suppliers and report back to Product Development Team findings and opinion.

· Process Improvement (20%)

  • Provide technical knowledge to continuous improvement efforts aimed at increasing productivity and yields.
  • Assist in the identification of new materials, methods, and tools in order to improve current processes and/or equipment.
  • Develop understanding of production processes to identify the key process parameters related to yield and product performance.
  • Support the execution of studies to stabilize, characterize, and optimize key process parameters.
  • Assist in the maintenance and support of all Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Statistical Quality Control (SQC) tools.

Frequency Task List

· Daily

o Check e-mail and reply as necessary

o Check voicemail and reply as necessary

o Interface with CGC personnel

o Provide support to manufacturing cells as needed

o Review documentation for testing, changes, instructions, etc. and provide recommendations

o Walk manufacturing floor and review processes, focusing on areas of needed improvements.

· Weekly

o Update project timelines and summarize projects

o Meet with manager to discuss results and path forward

o Interface with suppliers and/or sub-contractors, including visits to existing and/or potential suppliers/sub-contractors.

o Research new materials, methods, and testing

o Evaluate new equipment and/or processes

o Review and report on the capability, efficiency and quality of components and finished clubs.

· Monthly

o Support production as needed


Authority to Act

· Adhere to Callaway Golf policies.

· Individual acts under own discretion on a day-to-day basis. Generally work is reviewed for accuracy, technical judgment, and adequacy by direct supervisor in order to ensure adherence to departmental and company objectives. Requests or tasks that fall outside of normal procedures should be handled on a case-by-case basis and reviewed with supervisor if necessary. Individual has some latitude to prioritize tasks and duties.

Technical Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

· General knowledge of manufacturing processes required.

· Proficient with MS Word, PowerPoint, Access, and Excel

· Good knowledge of statistical tools.

· Ability to manage multiple tasks

· Proficient in both written and verbal English & Mandarin required

· Able to read and interpret instructions, procedures, etc.

· Team player with good communication skills.

· Flexible and able to adapt to changing environments and priorities and function without rigid organizational boundaries.

· Must show evidence of increasing responsibility with years of experience.

· Must be able to demonstrate a successful track record.

· Highly energetic, creative, intelligent, and logical.

· Able to work extended hours in critical situations.

Education and/or Experience

· BS in Manufacturing or Industrial Engineering

· Technical knowledge of textiles, metals, plastics and its processes

· Knowledge of cut and sew process.

· Knowledge of silk screening and sublimation is a plus

· 3 years’ experience demonstrating skills in the above duties (or from apparel or soft goods)

· Six Sigma Green Belt certification ideal-

· Experience working for a US based company, representing said company in oversea activities

· Is occasionally in a climate controlled office environment where the sound level is quiet.

· Occasionally drives forklifts and other equipment.
