R&D One China is A Critical Organisation within RB China
R&D One China works closely with the RB China Business, as a key partner in developing the right portfolio strategy for brilliant innovation and activation in this important RB market and to ensure we maximise innovation from China to RB globally.
The China R&D organisation is set up to actively engage and partner with key internal and external stakeholders to set the Innovation Strategy for China to fuel both RB & RB China Growth. We work closely within the 1 R&D matrix & other X – Fn teams (supply, procurement, quality) & the commercial marketing teams to help set up the vision for China by leading thinking internally and partnering externally to drive what is possible technically, and put forward ideas that become reality, acting as stewards of our brands and future forward unmet needs to best serve our consumers.
The Sr. Associate One R&D China plays an essential role in building the overall health pipeline as part of the One China R&D team by understanding consumer and business needs across both NPD, EPD & BDI’s & being externally focussed to build new partnerships with technical assessment to deliver both in China and outside of China. In case candidate based in Anhui, he/she will act as the site lead within Anhui for the One R&D team & interface with the other site leads. He/she will lead work with other R&D sites in China & beyond to ensure we are reapplying best practise & developing talent within the site. He/she will work in close collaboration with the wider China R&D team & across the R&D matrix to ensure that we are audit ready and all compliance needs are being delivered.
Summary & Scope of Role
Accountable for the identification, development and delivery of projects and BDI’s to drive the local China portfolio. To drive ideas from China into global projects that are formalised within the category pipelines particularly in the connected health space and via E-commerce by working with third parties
Drive the building of strong partnerships with OEM/ODM across China as well as outside of China by working closely with Open Innovation, Procurement and other internal stakeholders to support innovation, maintenance, analytical & other capability building needs. Lead technical assessment for the formulation, specification and manufacture process for target products according to regulatory mandatory as well as RB R&D standards. Support regulatory to build relationships with key government partners who driving R&D/technical standards within China.
Lead work in the innovation space to identify new partners, externally and internally and make recommendation on how best to drive innovation with China both for internal and external innovation. Work with legal and procurement consistently to ensure RB commercial interests are protected.
To represent R&D on all relevant projects and initiatives by supporting the development of new products, extending portfolios & initiatives by providing technical expertise and interfacing effectively and efficiently with other functions in the business.
Work as part of the 1 R&D team in China to develop fit for purpose processes to respect the needs of the local and global requirements to ensure that the team works in the most effective manner with a continuous improvement mindset.
Responsible for the management of all technical matters relating to the projects and initiatives for which they and their team have the accountability for and drive a continuous improvement mindset
In case candidate based in Anhui, he/she will be the lead R&D representative to the X-Fn team within Anhui to ensure strong collaboration across the R&D matrix within the site & across the China region to enable consistency of approach & ability to talk as One R&D with key stakeholders. Ensure proper resource utilisation & management of H&S requirements to ensure compliance & reporting of all key requirements to the global team. Ensure all work is done right first time to be audit ready.
To be technically curious & consumer savvy to support immediate & longer term needs. Work with the internal and external partners to identify potential new disruptive approaches to actively supporting the realisation of new business opportunities for RB China & Globally.
Expect to display technical ability and agility, therefore encouraged to develop these skills through initiatives within the team. To succeed and grow within this role you are expected to adopt a proactive, self-starting and multi-disciplinary approach & looking actively to reapply best practises from other areas.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drive along with the team identification of new ideas & approaches that will disrupt the Health pipeline in China. Ensure the creation of significant, exciting and relevant new projects specifically that encompass connectivity, digitalisation & E-commerce needs. Proactively explore new stretch opportunities for RB China across the focus brands considering new APIs, ingredients, formats, analytical methods, regulatory pathways, connected health areas, blockbuster claims and BDI’s. To be supported with strong IP positions wherever possible.
- Lead technical assessment to make sure regulatory mandatory as well as RB standards are all met for New Product Development. Ensure all the technical content needed is complete, consistent and accurate and done on time to successfully launch new projects and other initiatives with excellence.
- Be externally focussed through tracking the competitive and market landscape and build strong partnerships across China as well as outside of China by working closely with Open Innovation, Procurement and other internal stakeholders to support both China and global pipeline. Work with legal and procurement consistently to ensure RB commercial interests are protected.
- Build key business relationships with senior stakeholders within 1 R&D both within China & globally & with other key functional partners to deliver both short and longer term initiatives across E2E development cycle.
Support as needed any maintenance activities to ensure all China specific formulae specifications and to be responsible for ensuring that all development activity within the team conforms to legislative, Health and Safety and environmental requirements.
Lead the delivery of local facility improvements, namely: offices and laboratories, working very closely with all members of the R&D team within Anhui & elsewhere. Ensuring that a professional and compliant working environment is provided for the team.
Key Challenges
- Identify the big ideas to drive into the pipeline and get commitment from commercial team to progress them in view of the other strategic need. Prove for both China and outside of China. Become a passionate advocate to drive new ideas into the business
- Effectively managing internal and external interfaces to ensure “seamless” development processes within Anhui & ensure effective communication to remote management
- Technical curiosity & agility to be able to build expertise in new technically rapidly in order to make sound R&D recommendations to business on whether to further progress
- Provision of a fast paced scientific service to demanding customers with challenging timelines to support needs across both traditional trade & the new channels (E commerce, M&B stores etc.) to embody Digital at Heart.
- Effective influencing of people with different short term goals and objectives to create “passionate advocates” to take ownership of key strategic issues and drive decisions in the China business
What experience & Skills are we looking for?
- Master degree in a relevant scientific discipline, PhD is an advantage
- 5 years + experience within a TCM / OTC / FMCG environment with experience at an associate level with a proven track record of delivering new ideas/products by working with external providers. R&D formulation and/or analytical experience is an advantage.
- Flexibility for travel and working in remote environment. Management experience of leading small technical team is an advantage.
- Prior experience in the China Health Market is essential, having worked across range of regulatory classifications. Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills in English
- Results oriented, entrepreneurial and self-motivating with a bias for action, capability to define, evaluate and take risks
- Passionate and curious to explore and identify new ideas and approaches to deliver new disruptive innovation ideas.
- Global & local mindset with a proven track record of collaboration with internal & external R&D and non R&D functions
