JOB SUMMARY

The role of the Design-Development Manager is to act in the first instance as a bridge between ID & PD to facilitate projects & improve efficiencies in development. As part of this, support of Development and technological advancement in product development will be required so as to shorten potential RFP/RFQ stages and enhance the initial project stages & proposition in manufacturing.
The role is not Manager of Design, Manager of PD or a Project Manager – it is a standalone role that straddles both camps (ID/PD) and strengthens both by ensuring designs can be realised and products can be made.

In undertaking this role you will provide leadership, insight, drive development of innovations and overall direction to development of products. You will be responsible for the analysis, design, development, testing, documenting, and support of all products and supporting tools required to take client ideas to mass production.

You have an innate and instinctive feel for what good design means and how this can be translated into real world products in a mass production environment. Your skills extend from introducing products to the shop floor for mass production to making samples of initial concept designs for clients review and appraisal. Your curious nature pushes you to look for the new and emerging technologies and process that make the difference between a good and great product. You don’t mind getting your hands dirty and making long days to get the product ‘just right’ in order to meet your own and clients exacting standards.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Clear understanding of how to scope out work and relay to relevant PD team – this is the early engagement stage which can take place as early as the first meeting to ascertain the needs and wants of the customer from a technical point of view by working with them to discern what the real needs are, from what can be an initially vague brief.

Early stage analysis of the intended design to put forward an initial DFM that can be used as the basis for internal and customer discussion. The viability of the design from this assessment will guide the next steps in the RFQ/RFP process i.e. if the design is too complex, incomplete or immature after initial DFM then this should prompt for more work to be done prior to submitting the RFP/RFQ.

-Evaluate the feasibility of selected concepts to meet functional, cosmetic and customer needs
-Design, develop and prototype new products in accordance with company & customer product development process
-Evaluate the feasibility of concepts and/or prototypes through DFM/DFMEA/DOE engineering testing and analysis, consistent with customer expectations
-Develop timelines for development tasks and appraise performance against plan
-Evaluate, document, and implement potential design and process changes to improve product performance, manufacturability,
-Supervise tooling design
-Assess reliability, safety, performance and risk of new designs & methodologies; Coordinate and communicate development schedules and compatibility or design issues throughout the team continuously
-Provide input into the creation/modification of product specifications in alignment with
customer requirements
-Transfer of designs to manufacturing through liaison with manufacturing engineering
-Pull-in and drive application of latest materials, processes & agile methodologies

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

-Perform partner visits to development and asses the implementation of correct technology, material and applications
-Work cross functionally to develop and foster internal relations with other departments
-Investigate and manage planned roadmaps
-Review of customer designs and recommendations for any changes/updates to make for better DFM – ascertain feasibility of proposed materials, finishes and tolerances
-Support BD at meetings to provide technical inputs where appropriate
-Support Design to ensure designs have high degree of produceability and we can maintain a high fidelity between what we show customers and what leaves the factory – whether from the Lab or MP lines
-Knowledge share findings in tech and developments with ID, PD and all key stakeholders to bring general knowledge levels up
-Pull in of manufacturing processes and sharing of these across larger teams
-Seek manufacturing efficiencies (as part of process update)
-Review and sign off on CAD files prior to sending to vendor to quote and customer to review. Sign off being based on the initial brief as received from customer/BD
QUALIFICATIONS

-Demonstrated leadership roles in previous positions
-Previous team management and supervision
-Excellent public presentation and interaction skills
-Client interaction
-General project management skills
-Excellent in reporting (PPT, Keynote)

REQUIRED

-Minimum 7 year’s experience in similar position a must - preferably from mobile accessory, automotive interior, footwear, fashion or EMS industry.
-Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Engineering or Industrial Design
-Strong knowledge of technology platforms and systems
