Day to Day Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be able to manage a cross functional team and will apply traditional project management tools. In addition, the successful candidate will be experienced in structured product and process development and be able to utilize risk management tools, to ensure on-time delivery.
The Bending Engineer will support the development of processes, transfer technologies to manufacturing and qualify new process and product technologies. Initial projects will be in the areas of glass bending, tempering and lamination. This will include evaluating the suitability and shortcomings of commercial bending systems for thin glass processing. Where shortcomings exist for thin glass bending, work with commercial glass bending equipment suppliers or the internal equipment development organization, to develop upgrades so these systems are compatible with thin glass.
Interface with early-stage manufacturing teams such that prototype process / product delivery is consistent with long-term scalability. They will coordinate with the product engineering function to ensure that process, product and reliability testing is appropriate to new product introduction.
Assess strengths and weaknesses of materials and process alternatives
Assist in the determination of process specifications and measurement methods
Assist in the determination of the appropriate measurements methods
Support efforts to determine the root cause of product failures
Support activities for the measurement, analysis and implementation of process alternatives
Travel Requirements (please note if international):
Travel is expected to be approx. 50%. This would be a combination of domestic and international travel. International travel would is most commonly to Europe.
Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:
40 hours per week. Flex-time is acceptable with core working hours from 9 AM to 4 PM.
Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess)
1. Technical expertise in the auto glazing processing field with experience in bending, tempering and, preferably, lamination.
2. Understanding and experience with various types of automotive bending equipment and processes: sag bending, press bending, roller bending and the advantages and disadvantages of each type
3. Have a solid grasp of the fundamentals of engineering: especially heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics.
4. The ability to assimilate requirements from the greater project team and to rapidly incorporate these into a detailed project plan. The ability to seamlessly integrate risk management into the overall project plan at the outset, and to track and report progress effectively to key stakeholders.
5. Ability to engage technical talent to solve difficult technical problems. Demonstrated ability to lead teams of engineers and scientists.
6. Familiarity with auto glazing standards interpretation. Experience with automotive glass fabrication provides a forming engineer with an understanding of the customer requirements and OEM expectations for product design and product quality
7. Good written and verbal communicate skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with customers, external suppliers, and team members with commercial, technical, reliability and operations backgrounds.
8. The ability to organize and drive work across functional / organizational boundaries to meet internal and external timelines.
9. The ability to work in the more ambiguous and frequently changing environment of early-stage R&D by focusing on risk management / reduction, and to modify the traditional project management methodologies accordingly.
10. Possess strong work ethic and attention to detail with excellent organizational skills.
Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess)
1. Experience in the automotive glazing field with standards compliance, product acceptance testing, and validation.
2. Experience in leading teams in the resolution of customer-related technical issues.
3. Ability to effectively work across a broad spectrum of automotive personnel including OEM engineering and automotive fabrication personnel (from senior leadership, plant managers, engineering, plant equipment operators, tooling fabricators, and general glass handling personnel).
4. Competency in contract external supplier management and qualification and contract management.
5. Six Sigma Black Belt, Design for Six Sigma training, or experience with QFD methodologies, to effectively communicate with project staff.
6. Fluent command of the English language and able to compose and communicate, both in written and verbal formats, complex operations and manufacturing issues to the various levels inside and outside of the organization
Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration)
Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline (Mechanical or Ceramic Engineering preferred) with a minimum of 7 years experience in material-centric business and/or related end-user applications. Equivalent education/experience will be considered.

1. Aptitude for success in a dynamic, rapidly changing environment
