About the Role

The PCB and SMD assembly Cost Engineer position will report into the HARMAN Best Cost Analytics organization and will be responsible for the development of “should cost” models and the realization of best cost at HARMAN’s component suppliers.  The developed cost models will establish Design-to-Cost targets that will be utilized by HARMAN teams including Engineering and Procurement.

What You Will Do

• Utilize internal and external databases to build cost models for PCB and manufacturing
• Ensure best cost of HARMAN’s products by supporting Procurement during negotiations and by improvement of production process
• Define the HARMAN “best practice” cost reference for different types of PCBs used in HARMAN’s Automotive products including manufacturing from PCBA to final assembly level:

o    Infotainment Systems

o    Car Audio Systems

o    Advanced Driver Assist Systems

o    Displays

o    Telematics Control Units

• Improve supplier engagement by supplier visits, supplier best practice evaluation, cost audits, etc.

• Analyze Supplier cost breakdowns and understand all cost drivers
• Develop close technical relationships with suppliers to identify best cost solutions, including emerging technologies that provide cost improvements
• Work with Engineering & Product Sourcing teams during RFI/RFQ phases concerning the most cost-effective solution based on standardized design processes and production methods
• Evaluate cost impact of alternative technical options (materials, manufacturing methods, functions) during product development process
• Propose technology-based and lean optimization measures in supply chain
• Utilize cost models and associated data to train HARMAN teams on Design-to-Cost best practices

What You Need

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, preferably Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or Financial Degree with electronic production experience
• Minimum 5-6 year of experience in the following areas:

o    Cost engineering of PCB and PCBA manufacturing

o    Electronic advanced manufacturing engineering for PCB and PCBA

o    Process engineering

o    VA/VE of electronic systems

o    LEAN

o    Process optimization

• Experience with the following production processes:

o    PCB manufacturing (Conventional, HDI, FPC etc.)

o    PCBA manufacturing (SMT, wave/reflow soldering, AIL, ICT/FCT etc.)

• Advanced customer value and costing knowledge, cost structure analysis, cost modeling and process analysis
• Strong negotiation skills
• Systematical approach
• Excellent presentation skills and demonstrated ability to effectively present complex technical topics
• Demonstrated passion and curiosity
• Experience working in a fast paced, highly measured, results focused environment

What is Nice to Have

• Master of Science Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering with PCB/PCBA, electronic system production experience
• Six sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certified
• PCB technical knowledge of typical HDI stack-up, BVH/IVH, MSAP via technology, PCB layout optimization
• Good knowledge of subtractive process for conventional PCB, FPC, high multilayer Any-layer HDI, and MSAP production process with its advantage for fine line width application in SLP production
• Cost modeling experience for PCB on Copper foil, PP, CCL, consumable cost to manufacturing
• Cost modeling experiences for SMT line including special production equipment/NRE: PCB stencils, soldering frame, programming equipment etc.
• Experience with automotive component materials and associated production process considerations is highly desirable
• Demonstrated ability to manage projects from idea generation to implementation
• Familiarity with automotive validation requirements and component level PPAPs
• VDA 6.3 & IATF 16949, preferred certified auditor
• IPC standards for PCB manufacturing and it’s acceptance criteria
• Experience working for a PCB producer or EMS/ODM
• Proven team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills who can effectively work with all levels of a global matrixed organization
• Change Orientation: Able to adapt to changing demands and conditions
