Position Summary

Teach For China is excited to announce an opening for a full-time Development Director for Mainland China, based in Beijing and reporting directly to the VP of Development, Mainland China. This position provides a goal oriented strategic thinker not only with the opportunity to materially advance Teach For China’s mission of educational equity, but to develop unique and invaluable insight into the emerging Chinese philanthropic environment while building critical account management, strategic thinking, and communication skills.

Teach For China’s Development team works to fulfill Teach For China’s potential as a force for change in China by securing the necessary funding for Teach For China’s mission, with an emphasis on resources that will contribute to a long-term sustainable funding model. We do this through marshaling resources, cultivating public and private sector champions and creating opportunities for revenue growth in China, Hong Kong and the United States of America.

The Development Director will play a pivotal role in growing fundraising in Mainland China, a regional portfolio which last year generated nearly USD $2.5M in funding from a variety of corporate, foundation, and individual donors. There is tremendous opportunity to grow our base of support on the Mainland, and the fundraising target for our 2015-2016 fiscal year is over USD $4M. The Director will work closely with our Mainland China VP of Development to develop and implement strategy around outreach and stewardship of major Chinese individual and corporate donors. He/she will be responsible for managing donor relationships including the drafting of grant applications, design / execution of partner engagement programs, and planning / executing fundraising events.

Teach For China seeks a mission-focused, proactive individual who is at ease in both the Chinese and US contexts, a compelling communicator, and a problem-solver who is energized by working in a high-growth, entrepreneurial organization. Successful candidates must thrive in a fast-paced work environment and demonstrate the ability to be strategic as well as exceptionally organized.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Donor Portfolio Management
The Development Director will help drive continued aggressive growth in Teach For China’s Mainland China funding portfolio, working closely with the VP of Development, Mainland China to set strategy for enriching our donor pipeline and acting as the primary point of contact / relationship holder for individuals and corporations.
As a donor portfolio owner, the Development Director can expect to:
Prepare donor communications including grant proposals, and general presentations on our model / impact
Lead meetings with potential / current donors
Identify donor needs / interests and design a series of appropriate touch points to effectively cultivate individuals and organizations as supporters of Teach For China; this may include donor dinners, presentations to groups of high potential prospects, volunteering opportunities, etc.
Maintain accurate and complete records on current and prospective donors; manage upwards to ensure that prospects are being moved through the pipeline efficiently.

Fundraising Events
Teach For China holds two major fundraising galas per year—one in Hong Kong and one in Mainland China—which together constituted nearly US $3M in funding in the 2014-15 fiscal year. The Development Director will play a key role in the success of this event by:
Working closely with an event planner and other third-party event planners oversee event design (e.g. invitations, décor, theme, event run-down) as well as excellent logistical planning and execution
Helping manage critical high-stakes relationships the volunteer Gala Committee (which includes several Teach For China Board members) to generate support from guests and donors at the event
Work with our volunteer leadership and the development team to ensure that Gala supporters are cultivated to become ongoing donors

Mass / Retail Giving (Internet and Social Media based)
Launch a successful mass giving program in China targeting entry / mid-level donations. This will involve:
Develop a payment infrastructure that is technologically robust and compliant with Chinese fundraising regulations to allow Teach For China to collect RMB denominated donations via the internet;
Developing compelling asks at levels between RMB 100 and RMB 2,000
Execute 2 compelling social media / internet based campaigns in the next 12 months; put an ongoing schedule of campaigns in place such that mass giving becomes a low-touch and reliable income stream.

Qualifications

Goal oriented, proactive self-starter who can work independently
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Strong and proven strategic thinking, and analytical skills
Outstanding attention to detail and ability to multi-task, independently prioritize tasks and produce high quality end product in a dynamic, start-up environment
Bachelor’s degree required
Excellent native written and oral Mandarin required, strong oral English required, strong written English a plus.
Previous non-profit fundraising experience is not required; however experience in a consulting/client service/ investor/customer facing role is valuable (e.g. private banking, high end sales / account management, professional consulting services)
