Job Title: Supervisor – Test Bench Services
Minimum Qualifications
University undergraduate certificate or degree in Engineering, mechanical engineering or automation
is preferred.
Minimum 5 years testing lab experience in the automotive industry. Overseas working experience and
powertrain development background would be a plus.
Sufficient verbal and written English. Other language skills would be an asset.
Sufficient technical understanding of the functions/mechanisms as well as potential failure modes of
driveline products, such as transfer-cases, axles, power take-off units, etc.
Sufficient technical understanding of common vehicle powertrain system components and their
functions.
Proficient in LabVIEW and Diadem.
Highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Office, and PowerPoint.
High level of creativity, and analytical ability to perform problem solving, failure resolution, and
preventive occurrence.
Able too conduct fair and effective disciplinary action.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Manages the Test Bench Services group, which consists of the Driveline Systems ((DS) Test
Technicians.
Primarily responsible for reviewing, assigning, and completing work requests and being responsible
for ensuring the test benches are run safely, without delay or operational error, and in accordance to
the approved test procedures and best practices as discussed with DS Engineering group.
Ensures all activities of the Test Bench Services group are in conformance to the adopted quality
policy and related processes and work instructions.
Ensures all interactions between the Test Bench Services group and other ECC groups occur
seamlessly to promote an efficient and quality-oriented culture.
Continuously reviews and cross-references work requests with the latest Program DVP&R and
related SORs or technical specifications. Able to recognize any work requests that are outside the
scope of Program DVP&R and therefore confirm the required test inputs and expected deliverables.
Ensures all test procedures and available work instructions are approved, and properly
referenced/understood by the Test Technicians before conducting any test. Responsible for informing
the Powertrain Testing group whenever improvements are required to the test procedures or work
instructions, in order to prevent any possibility of operational error.
Responsible for frequently monitoring the work environment and work behavior of the Test
Technicians in order to propose continuous improvement ideas for better work efficiency and quality.
Shares responsibility for achieving the quality objectives (KMIs) related to the on time
delivery/completion of DS testing requests and DS test bench utilization.
Able to standardize technician working time, and base any quoted working hours on optimal work
efficiency with limited dependence on overtime. When required, able to schedule the required
manpower to conduct tests during overtime or on the weekends.
Able to measure the entire working process efficiency between receiving a work order and delivering
the test result. Responsible for continuously optimizing the process related to each work step, based
on evaluating measurable results. The optimization is related but not limited to process, equipment,
people and technology.
Responsible for understanding the financial tracking system for technician and test equipment hours.
Based on this, able to continuously monitor and correct the accuracy of charged hours, and help
control the actual hours to remain within budget.
Able to create utilization forecasts for test benches, showing how work capacity compares to the
expected utilization, and therefore how to match the expected utilization.
Demonstrates a high level of understanding for the mechanical/electrical structure of all DS testing
equipment, as well as its accompanying software. Able to apply this understanding towards any
equipment SORs that the ECC maintenance team will create. Also able to diagnose issues related to
testing equipment, as well as train the Testing Technicians on how to operate the testing equipment.
Takes the lead in explaining any occurrence of test failure or operational error. Contributes by
presenting objective data, which clearly shows the sequence of failure//error, and in context to the
bench operation and product function. When required, helps complete documentation such as 8D,
CAR, Fish-bone etc., and responsible for proposing preventive occurrence ideas and sustaining
them over time.
Able to use a comprehensive competency analysis for the Test Technicians, in order to identify
strengths and weaknesses. Based on this, develops an aggressive but fair improvement plan to
achieve the same level of competency as other testing labs that are known to exhibit “best practices”.
Able to make work arrangements to minimize any chance of operational error. In addition, closely
monitors/approves the daily communication between Test Technicians by implementing a rotational
and overlapping work shift system with work record/checklists.
When required, able to interact directly with global engineering centers for the coordination and
support of outsourced tests.
Support the Powertrain Testing group respond to customer RFQs by discussing the technical
feasibility study / risk analysis, and provides the required bench and labor hours.
Support the Powertrain Testing group create test reports by explaining the implemented test
procedures and recorded data to the Powertrain Testing group.
Support the ECC Maintenance Team by cross-checking the latest maintenance records with the
known status of test equipment. Also checks whether preventive maintenance and calibration has
been conducted on time, and able to elevate any delay or potential quality concerns to ECC
management.
Supports departmental growth plans by identifying standard tests that are not capable of being
conducted in the ECC testing lab, or commonly outsourced from ECC. Proposes bench modifications
or CAPEX in order to achieve more testing capability and utilization.
Responsible for raising any purchase requests on behalf of the Test Technicians.
Responsible for checking any expense reports submitted by the Test Technicians.
Ensures all operational and maintenance work of the testing lab conform to the defined 5S guidelines
and EHS guidelines.
Ensures health/safety is prioritized in the work environment regardless of specific EHS guidelines or
management requests.
Supports ECC management propose and implement organizational changes related to the Test
Bench Services team.
Manages all HR related matters for subordinates, such as performance appraisals, development
plans, fair and effective discipline, salary adjustments, HR system approvals, etc.
Performs other duties as required by Management.
