Purpose of the position


The product being developed is a large scale energy storage system. The technology on which this is based has been proven in the laboratory. No commercially viable systems based on this technology are currently available. The project objective is to produce a high volume manufacturable product based on the proven laboratory technology. The Engineering manager is to manage a team of about 30 technical staff and various subcontractors to produce a working pre commercial system that is ready to take to volume manufacturing.


Responsibilities & duties


▌Responsibility 1 – Project Management

Project management is the management of timeline, budget and deliverable. This will be achieved through the ongoing updating of the plan and reporting on a regular basis the progress against the project plan and objective. The management will include the management of the internal resources as well as external resources such as consultants and subcontractors to ensure timely, budget driven results. The engineering manager will be expected to alert to an significant deviations from expected budget, timeline or performance. This information will need to be obtained by regular communication with the team leaders and senior engineers in the group.

Work standard – It is expected regular reporting to the management team as well as team leaders and senior staff will be essential and any concerns regarding budget, timeline, or performance be raised and solutions proposed for approval.

▌Responsibility 2 – Communications
The company is bilingual (English and Chinese). Effective communications will be the responsibility of the engineering manager. This is achieved through direct involvement or directing meetings he/she can see that are required to maintain the project plan. The manager should be familiar with different technology options to promote better communication across language and geographic difference.

Work standard – The engineering manager must be prepared to initiate action in connecting relevant parties whenever they see the need. Communication must be clear and concise and outcomes/actions clear for all parties.

▌Responsibility 3 – Subcontractor Management
To accelerate the project progress, subcontractors and consultants will be used. It is the responsibility of the engineering manager to ensure that contract establishment is fair and reasonable and ongoing performance is monitored and action taken if performance is not to expectations. The management of the subcontractors will be undertaken with the support of the senior engineers of the relevant teams. It is also the engineering managers responsibility that there are measurable deliverables for the subcontractors and resolve any disputes regarding the completion or otherwise of subcontractor engagements.

Work standard – Clarity of deliverables at the commencement of a subcontract is essential for the successful management of the subcontract. The engineering manager must ensure that this is clear for all parties before the work is commenced.


▌Responsibility 4 – Documentation Control
The geographic separation and the rapid pace of development will require good documentation control. The engineering manager is responsible for seeing through the implementation of a document control system that meets the engineering groups requirements of access control, loca/remote access security and up to date information..

Work standard – High levels of security, reliability, accessibility and accuracy will be the measurable results of a successful document control system.
