The Senior Packaging Engineer Program Manager (PM) role is part of the Global Packaging team within Strategic Sourcing in the manufacturing and supply chain organization. Global Packaging is responsible for designing, managing, and implementing innovative and successful packaging solutions for all of Microsoft’s hardware and software products.

As a Senior Packaging Engineer PM located in Asia, this role will be focused on the engineering and manufacturing integration of hardware packaging programs, closely coordinating with Microsoft Redmond corporate partners and other supply chain regions.


A successful Senior Packaging Engineer will have responsibility for driving:

Manufacturing integration of packaging design programs
Packaging and manufacturing vendor management to support successful implementation of programs
Analysis of and developing methods and tools for manufacturing optimization
Engineering influence of package designs for optimizing costs, quality, and manufacturing operations
Development of material and component specifications to ensure consistent design performance and quality
Upfront engagement with Global Packaging development PM’s to identify and develop vendor capabilities
Establishing optimal vendor operational parameters
Completeness and comprehensive packaging specifications that optimize manufacturing
Document the technical aspects of vendor packaging production capabilities
Production technical advisor to Global Packaging
Coordination of change management with packaging and manufacturing vendors, NPI’s, and factory management
Vendor change management to partner to continuously improve efficiency and performances via repeatable processes
Designing optimal processes using 6-sigma, LEAN, and other relevant methodologies
Proactively managing manufacturing issues and resolve
Design for “X” (where “X” equals manufacturing verification, resource optimization, cost, quality, reliability, production verification, environment, test)
Analysis of design defects and lead practices for detection and resolution
Cross functional support as a domain expert in packaging manufacturing
Extensible and scalable vendor operations
Design review processes and techniques for manufacturing vendors (DFA, FMEA)
Mentoring of junior team members
Proactively identified new tools, technologies, and methods
Communication of status and developed agreements between groups that clarify priorities

Education / Certifications / Work Experience
B.S. or M.S. degree in Package Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or related discipline
5-7 years packaging manufacturing experience in a factory setting
10+ years of comprehensive package development responsibility
Packaging manufacturing processes and automation development
6-Sigma black belt
