POSITION SUMMARY
Purpose
The primary accountability of this position is to drive achievement of corporate Continuous Improvement program goals by leading improvement projects which follow the DMAIC methodology and make use of the full suite of CI tools including foundational through advanced Lean and Sigma tools.
The Black Belt is focused on leading process improvement projects through the use of the CI methodology and tools so that assigned improvement objectives are achieved. The Black Belt is able to motivate, energize and execute change initiatives. The Black Belt serves as a change facilitator, internal CI tool mentor and coach to drive CI projects on an ongoing basis.
The Black Belt will spend approximately 80% of time leading DMAIC based improvement project execution. The Black Belt will replicate successful projects by working with CI Manager, EMBBs, Supply Chain team, and other Black Belts via the use of well documented projects and proper updates to project tracking systems. The 20% balance is spent on CI activities such as coaching, training, and supporting integrated planning, key initiatives, metric hierarchy, and project pipeline build.
The Black Belt will advocate for new ways of doing things and challenge conventional wisdom by introducing and demonstrating proven improvement strategies. This individual will continuously communicate to others on the value of using improvement tools, the impact of having optimal processes and systems, the vision of how to get there, and most importantly, how it results in increased productivity, higher satisfaction for customers and employees, and improved margin for the business.
The Black Belt will perform the following activities in a manner that promotes team performance and reflects the philosophy of the Air Products CI Model:
- FOCUS: Partner with Action Team members to develop the scope of CI projects and to evaluate potential benefits prior to execution of the project so that only those projects relevant to the organization's CI plan proceed to execution.
- TOOLS: Once certified/qualified, coach and guide team members through the execution of a CI project by following the prescribed use of the CI Tools and Toll Gate review process to achieve established objectives.
- LEARNING: Actively contribute and support the larger CI Community of Practice to ensure internal and external knowledge sharing and the continuous improvement of the tool applications and the facilitators' skills. Ensure that as DMAIC projects exit the control phase, project documentation is completed and project tracking systems are updated to allow for rapid project replication.
- LEADERSHIP: Engage the support and buy-in of leaders within the organization by promoting the importance and value of the CI Model and Process.
DIMENSIONS(will vary)
- Estimated targets will be to directly deliver $0.2MM+ of annual hard and/or enabling benefits, depending on projects assigned.
- Geography: Regional or Local depending on area and organization supported.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Approximately 80% of time spent on executing Lean Six Sigma projects and 20% time spent on broader CI initiatives.
- Receive projects assigned from Project Champion, or CI Manager. Execute LSS projects. Implement sustainable results. Complete Lessons Learned. Communicate results.
- Achieve business results from LSS methodology/deployment.
- Assist CI Manager, Project Champion, on the use of DMAIC methodology and Sigma/Lean tool sets to accomplish business improvements.
- Assist with summarizing and reporting business results achieved from specific CI projects into Power Steering.
- Once certified and licensed to coach, will coach/mentor 5+ Yellow/Green Belts as directed by the CI Manager.
- Accountable for demonstrating knowledge of DMAIC methodology and use of Lean and Sigma tools to achieve the improvement goals as defined by the CI Manager.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelors degree in business, engineering, mathematics, computer science or related field or equivalent education, technical training and experience
- Approximately 10+ years of experience and at least 2-3 years of experience in CI Black Belt position
- Black Belt certification (in LSS and DMAIC methodologies) in progress or achieved based on Air Products standard
- Demonstrates strong Leadership Competencies to include: Achieves Success Through Teams, Analyzes Issues and Uses Sound Judgment, Champions Change, Coaches and Develops People, Demonstrates Adaptability, Demonstrates an Environment of Trust, Influences Others
- Project management skills including oversight of project team, matrix management, resource identification, budgets, scheduling and planning
- Proven experience leading improvement projects and coaching and developing improvement resources, preferred
- Possess strong influencing, coaching, communication and facilitative skills
- Ability to bring teams together to achieve targets and goals
- Ability to diagnose and affect cultural change in moderate to difficult circumstances
