ROLE PURPOSE

The major role of the Process Development Chemist is to adopt and transfer chemical process from other Syngenta T&P or manufacturing sites to Nantong. His responsibilities include introduction and implementation of the process at Nantong plant and provide technical support and trouble-shooting for manufacturing. He is also responsible for general process improvement to reduce product cost. Other responsibilities also include technical support related to the Global Sourcing activities.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

To fully comply with requirements of Syngenta and local regulatory standards.
To carry out and to coordinate laboratory activities related to process introduction, process change, process improvement, troubleshooting, and raw material testing.
To support manufacturing in case of commissioning of new plant or modified processes, take part in technical start-up teams, to ensure that process intent is met and production is established safely and effectively.
To aid, advise or resolve (as an individual or as part of a team) manufacturing process problems.
To support manufacturing for continuous improvement in production performance
To provide regular communication and documentation to report issues and progress.
To ensure that all laboratory staff is following HSEQ regulations and instructions.
To promote innovation, team work and continuous improvement.
To provide cost estimate to assist re-siting activities.

Critical Knowledge:
?
Must have MS or PhD degree in Organic Chemistry or equivalent.
Thorough and practical knowledge of Organic Synthesis Skills for process development work.
Understand organic reaction mechanism and kinetics; know how to change reaction parameters to influence process yield and product quality.(understand impurities origins and fates).
Understand mass balance of a process and different effluents streams from it.
Demonstrated experience of analytics as well as good understanding of basic engineering is a must.
Appreciation of process safety and ecology norms.
Basic Agro-business understanding

Critical Skills:

Good oral and written communication skills in both Mandarin and English
Innovative - ability to analyze complex and diverse problem situation creatively leading to the generation and implementation of original solutions
Strong organizational skills - can handle multiple tasks.
Leadership - Mentoring / training / coaching of junior chemists or technicians
Working within a multi-cultural and multi-functional environment (both within T&P and externally)

Critical Experience:

These all relate to multi stage complex organic chemical processes
3-7 years in process development or production support
Experienced in leading/coordinating colleagues from different functions.
Experience in order to coordinate multi-functional activities (e.g. process safety, analytical development, registration, etc.)
Experience in process scale-ups or production
