Role purpose
To develop relationships with potential external partners to deliver high impact and high value scientific collaboration opportunities
1. "Collaboration" in its broadest sense, to include in- and out-licensing, venture capital investment, etc. Not including procurement of goods or services.
2. An in-flow of relevant, cutting-edge scientific and competitor knowledge into Syngenta
3. Enhanced reputation and influence in the outside world
4. Enhanced competitive edge through early identification and accelerated application of potentially disruptive, game-changing technologies

Accountabilities
1. To understand Syngenta's technology needs
2. To understand the technology landscape in China and how it aligns with the global picture, and to understand the unique features, for instance:
a. Potential options for leveraged funding
b. Location of Centres of Excellence in relevant science and technology areas
3. To develop and implement a China scouting strategy based on available resources and focussed on extracting maximum return on investment
4. To identify impactful and valuable collaboration opportunities and to feed a stream of such opportunities into the Syngenta evaluation system
5. To raise awareness of Syngenta and our brand at external institutions
6. To develop an understanding of what our competitors are doing and with whom in China
7. To co-create and co-develop particularly high value opportunities in partnership with potential external collaborators
8. To ensure an in-flow of cutting-edge science into Syngenta
9. To identify and recruit relevant Syngenta employees into the scouting network
10. To take over responsibility for currently ongoing crop protection-related collaborations in China

Critical success factors & key challenges
1. To establish a stream of collaboration opportunities for evaluation which ultimately lead to signed deals
2. To establish a good working relationship with Syngenta teams in China - leveraging local colleagues
3. To develop technology landscape for China
4. To resolve any potential tensions and conflicts, for instance between region/territory and global at crop level
5. To build and maintain a network of key external contacts

Knowledge, experience & capabilities
Critical knowledge
1. Understanding of the scientific research environment in China
2. Syngenta's scientific and business activities, and how China fits into the global picture
3. An excellent internal network within Syngenta R&D and into the business
4. A broad external network of relevant potential partners

Critical experience
1. PhD with at least 10 years post doctoral experience
2. Good publication record
3. Experience in working with external partners
4. Leadership of major projects
5. Experience living and working in China would be an advantage
