China-Britain Business Council
The China-Britain Business Council (CBBC) helps UK companies grow and develop their business in China, via a network of 15 locations in China and 11 in the UK. Our mission is to help UK companies of all sizes and sectors, whether new entrants or established operators, access the full potential of one of the fastest growing markets in the world. We deliver a range of practical services, including advice and consultancy, market research, event management, trade missions and exhibitions and incorporation.
Through more than 60 years of engagement, we have built up exceptional connections with government and business across China. CBBC works closely with a range of partners across the UK and China, including the Department for International Trade (DIT), and the UK Intellectual Property Office (UK IPO). For more information about us, please visit our website at www.cbbc.org.
CBBC is a vibrant place to work where you deliver projects alongside colleagues from a range of backgrounds. The majority of our team are China-UK specialists who have spent time either studying or working in both countries. As a team we aim to improve the prospects for Chinese and British companies to do increased business together more successfully.

Project Manager

We are seeking a dynamic and skilled candidate to work in CBBC’s Shanghai or Beijing office, with a role covering across China (and to some extent the UK). The purpose of the candidates’ work will ultimately be to support UK companies’ capacity to operate effectively in China’s business environment. CBBC hopes to have a positive impact on British companies’ understanding of business in China, and support China’s healthy development as a centre of international commerce.

The role will involve projects and other tasks promoting China’s legal environment and how it affects business, particularly in intellectual property and in industries where licensing of copyrightable works is commonplace. It will require a number of skills including in-depth research and reporting, project management, stakeholder engagement, event management and more.

The successful candidate will initially report to the Business Environment team which work primarily on projects related to intellectual property protection. The team also works with and supports other CBBC functions in their work to promote positive trade outcomes for UK businesses, so there will be opportunities to be involved with other teams (see Trade Promotion below). Also, CBBC work very closely with the British Embassy in the delivery of this work, particularly the intellectual property and trade teams.
1.Project Delivery – IP Protection (40% of role)

The successful candidate will support or lead on the delivery of projects. The following are examples of projects which the successful candidate may be working on:

?Online IP Protection – wide programme of meetings and seminars aiming to influence the IP protection environment on the Chinese internet, including liaising with large companies such as Alibaba, Baidu, WeChat and others.
?Cross-border Anti-counterfeiting – organising training days and dialogues with Chinese customs authorities and logistics centres.
?Copyright Collective Licensing – conducting research and organising workshops with collecting societies from the UK and China to help improve China’s ability to collect royalties and increase creativity. Will involve liaising with UK content producers, such as TV and movies, on their licensing strategies for China.
?IP Conferences and Delegations – organising large conferences, and leading delegations of Chinese companies to visit the UK or British IP experts to attend conferences in China.
?Trademarks, Brand Building and Economic Growth – Align Chinese firms’ expectations of local IP rights with international norms and providing incentives for Chinese investment in international brand building, using the experience of large UK brands as a reference.
?Rule of Law – researching and exploring how UK expertise in rule of law can have a positive impact on China’s legal and regulatory environment for copyright protection.

2.Programme Management and Reporting – IP Protection (30% of role)

The successful candidate will need to support the team by tracking projects delivered by CBBC and by external parties, and reporting progress and financial results according to relevant requirements. This may include:

?Tracking Projects - Designing Gantt charts and other documents to ensure smooth planning and delivery of projects
?Managing sub-contractors – liaison, issuing tenders, setting expectations, completing contracts
?Internal reporting – this will include using CBBC’s internal CRM system effectively to report on work completed; as well as liaising with CBBC’s finance team to help them manage cash flow
?Reporting to the CBBC funding bodies – making sure that project delivery is recorded and reported according to public procurement rules or other relevant regulations

3.Trade Promotion (30% of role)

?Improving Trade Outcomes for UK Companies: Using CBBC’s core projects as a foundation, find ways to support UK companies’ ability to export goods, services and license content effectively to China. This may include working closely with CBBC’s creative industries team on cross-department projects, as well as the British Embassy trade teams.

?Membership Services: Enhancing CBBC’s support to existing members. This may include:
 Organising events to help UK companies share insights with each other;
 Supporting special events e.g. British VIP engagement with business, debates or focus groups;
