CI BLACK BELT POSITIONS - ASIA TONNAGE GASES (2 China, 1 Korea/Taiwan)
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE:APD), a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases and chemicals, is seeking an experienced Operations Leader to become a Black Belt for its Asia Region facilities.
POSITION SUMMARY:
These are development position for Operations Leadership for Air Products' Asia Region Tonnage Gas business. The incumbent will be expected to become a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt for 18-36 months and then move to a leadership position consistent with their experience at one of Air Products' facilities. Locations for these positions are:
Black Belt Accountabilities (immediate):
The primary accountability of these positions is to drive achievement of corporate Continuous Improvement (CI) program goals by leading Lean Six Sigma (LSS) improvement projects which follow the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) or DMADV (Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Validate) methodology and make use of the full suite of CI tools including foundational through advanced tools. The successful candidates will be required to take Air Products internal Lean Six Sigma course and successfully perform 2 certification projects under close scrutiny to achieve internal certification. After certification, the Black Belts will be expected to execute several projects concurrently and/or coach new Green Belts or Black Belts in region until an appropriate Operations Leadership position is available. (In rare cases, the incumbent may continue in the Continuous Improvement Center of Excellence or Operations as a Tool Expert or CI Manager).
Black Belts are focused on leading process improvement projects through the use of the CI methodology and tools so that assigned improvement objectives are achieved. Black Belts are able to motivate, energize and execute change initiatives serving as a change facilitator, internal CI tool mentor and coach to drive CI projects on an ongoing basis. Approximately 80% of their time will be spent leading Lean Six Sigma improvement project execution. Additionally the Black Belt will replicate successful projects by working with Functional Managers, CI Managers, MBBs and other Black Belts via the use of well documented projects and proper updates to project tracking systems.
Black Belts advocate for new ways of doing things and challenge conventional wisdom by introducing and demonstrating proven improvement strategies. These individuals will continuously communicate to others on the value of using improvement methodologies and tools, the impact of having optimal processes and systems, the vision of how to get there, and most importantly, how it results in increased growth, productivity and higher satisfaction for customers and employees, resulting in improved margin for the business.
Operations Leadership (future position):
When the Black Belts transition to an Operations Leadership position (e.g., Site Supervisor, Site Manager etc.) incumbents will be expected to be responsible and accountable for the EH&S performance, manufacturing operations and reliability of facilities. Operations Leadership positions objectives are to coordinate production and maintenance activities to meet customer requirements at the lowest total cost. The expectation is that the experience of performing Black Belt duties will enable the incumbents to perform those duties in a superior fashion.
Together with the Global Operations community, Operations Leaders establish 'best practice' standards to meet on-stream targets and establish preventative and corrective maintenance strategies and drive continuous improvement
BLACK BELT DIMENSIONS:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the DMAIC methodology and the Lean and Sigma tool sets via successful project execution.
- Achieve certification based on requirements defined.
- 80 % time spent leading Lean and Sigma project execution and 20 % time spent on broader CI initiatives such as planning, metric development, change management, program management, etc.
- Once certified and licensed to coach, coach/mentor 5+ Yellow/Green Belts, and other Black Belts in training
- Improvement Measures: Accountable for demonstrating knowledge of DMAIC methodology and use of Lean and Sigma tools to achieve defined improvement goals. Estimated targets will be to directly deliver $0.5-$1.0MM of annual cost improvement hard benefits.
To be qualified for an Operations Leadership position, the incumbents will be required to develop these dimensions:
- Effective Communications skills
- Experience in Air Separation and/or Hydrogen/CO plant operations and distribution
- Successful track record or aptitude in Environmental, Health, Safety, and Quality
- Demonstrated managerial leadership and interpersonal skills
- Strong commitment to employee involvement, team building and diversity
- Demonstrated commitment to asset management programs and productivity improvement
BLACK BELT JOB REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

- Ability to deal with ambiguity
- Project management skills including oversight of project teams, resource identification, budgets, scheduling and planning
- Possess strong influencing, coaching, communication and facilitative skills
- Ability to bring teams together to achieve targets and goals
- Ability to diagnose and affect cultural change in moderate to difficult circumstances
- Proven ability to execute projects self sufficiently in an operating and technical environment.
Future Operations Leadership Qualifications/Requirements (can be developed during Black Belt assignment):
- 7+ years of industrial experience including supervision
- Ability to interface with senior customer representatives and community leaders
- Demonstrated commitment to EH&S
- Self-starter with proven leadership abilities
- Experience in process plant operation / maintenance
