Job Outline
The role holder is expected to manage, motivate and lead a team of highly skilled engineering technicians in order to promote the effective management and operation all analytical and testing facilities in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and to provide the support on teaching and research activities to high standards within the agreed targets.

Qualifications
Essential
? Engineering/science degree or equivalent;
? Planning and organising skills required to manage projects, including the deployment of people and other resources;
? Excellent communication and presentation skill in English;
? Proven high level of planning and organization skills and resource management;
? Identify and organize training and development for technical staff;
? Evidence of more than 3 years of work experience in a relevant technical/scientific role;
? Proven skills in the effective management of people;
? Proven technical specialist knowledge and understanding in own technical area;
? Ability to communicate clearly to non-specialist and senior level audiences;
? Proven ability to persuade, motivate and lead;
? Interpretation and implementation of work related regulations to international standards specifically Health and Safety;
? Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment;
? Ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment;
? Ability to work to deadlines and to prioritise tasks;
Desirable
? Experience in equipment management system;
? Excellent computer and technical drawing skills;
? Excellent analytical and problem solving capability;
? Experienced in operating at least two or more of the following equipment: Field Emission Scanning Electron Microsc, X-ray diffraction, ICP-MS, LC-MS-MS,5-Axis CNC, Coordinate measuring machine, 3D Laser-sintering system, etc;
? Full working knowledge of the design of engineering equipment;
? Experience of implementing capital expenditure projects;
? Knowledge of international standards relating to laboratory and workshop facilities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
? To organize, manage, and lead the analytical laboratory technicians in FOSE in a safe, efficient and effective manner;
? To be responsible for all the maintenance, repairing, upgrading and general housekeeping of the FOSE’s analytical laboratories;
? To initiate and lead the further development of new testing abilities to meet new research requirements;
? To be responsible for all the analytical and testing assets within FOSE, and to create standardized testing procedures and operation instructions;
? To provide insightful opinions and interpretations of testing data to support research and teaching activities;
? To understand, conceptualize and interpret the technical and experimental requirements of staff and students, and manage the training of PHD students and staff members;
? To assist the procurement office in the identification, specification, negotiation, and commissioning of new facilities within agreed time scales and costs;
? To cooperate with other university units and the Faculty Safety Director for all aspects of Health and Safety within the area, including risk assessments, Health and Safety assessments and keeping up-to-date with regulations;
? To ensure the skill sets of the technicians and breadth of knowledge of engineering equipment are up to date and sufficient to provide advice and first class support to staff and students in their practical work;
? To participate in training and staff development schemes as trainer or trainee as appropriate;
? To maintain appropriate professional development, expertise and awareness;
? To undertake other tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be required;
