SKILLS
Analytical - Individual has the ability to make decisions based on data not assumptions. Follow -up is a critical characteristic of the individual.
Tenacity - Individual needs to stick to a project for the long-haul. Lean Thinking is not easy and can be different than the current belief window of the people in authority. Problem solving must be carried out to .root cause. not just .direct cause..
Hands-On - The best way to learn and teach is on the shop floor, or .at the actual situation. (GO AND SEE). Getting your hands dirty at work is a good thing. (ie more than 60% of your time must be spent on the production floor)
Team Skills - Individual needs to be strongly self-motivated and must be open to working as a team to be most effective. This requires open and honest communication with team members and Management, and a respect for everyone is a .MUST.. You must make everyone feel they are a key part of the team, and that you have their best interests in mind along with that of the company.
Good Listening Skills - Individual needs to listen closely to the people that are involved in a problem, for what they have to say. Not considering what people who touch the problem have to say, and not including them in the improvement effort, will result in us not considering all the facts that pertain to a problem, and will result in a lack of engagement by the people who need to implement changes. Where people don't have much to say, we need to draw them out and make them aware that their opinion matters and show them that everyone's information or opinion is critical to solving a problem.
Action Oriented - When doing experiments, use a quick approach that results in advancing solutions quickly. Taking the time to do a lengthy investigation and analyzing all the results will result in a delayed improvement. Consider what can be done now to make a difference, or learn something different, regarding your area of problem solving.
Desire to Solve Problems - Problems are to be sought out and solved. Solving problems using the scientific method is the cornerstone to Lean. Good problem solving skills, and a desire to go beyond the symptoms to find the root cause of a problem are essential and part of the deeper learning and .Lean Thinking.. Being able to use Value Stream Mapping to aid is a must.
Learn from Mistakes - Mistakes are inevitable. Learn from them so the same mistake is not made again. .Smart People learn from their own mistakes, Wise People learn from other's mistakes.. Emphasize to the team that mistakes do not equate to failure and a stoppage of the continuous improvement effort, but is a positive and valuable step in the learning process. Failures will happen. Not letting them stop you from trying again until you get it right, is the best approach. The only time you fail is when you stop trying.
Willing to Take Risks - The number .1. thing that prevents the implementation of Lean is fear. Even if your schooling, beliefs and paradigms tell you the way to go, you must be willing to challenge them and take some risk on new ideas and actions.
Winning & Convincing - In the Lean role you have no authority. Anything you accomplish is through the work of others. You must be able to convince others that you must try a new way of doing things. Use data and facts to convince others. Your satisfaction in this role is seeing others learn and solve problems. This is what keeps you also motivated and excited each day.
Open to Criticism/Scrutiny - Willing to tell Management that you do not agree with a decision, but after voicing your opinion, support the Management decision, by trying to make the best of it.
Strive for Perfection - Many times, improvements implemented on the production floor is a compromise of perfection. With the goal of Lowest Cost, Highest Quality, Shortest Lead Time, we need to strive for the .perfect solution. by taking small improvement steps to make things better than they are today. We must relentlessly pursue the elimination of all the different types of waste.
Open to New Ideas and Personal Development- Just as we apply continuous improvement to processes, we need to continuously improve ourselves also - we cannot become stagnant. New materials and methods are constantly being developed. We can learn from everyone we meet each day, no matter where in the world they reside. We cannot accept that our way is the only way of doing something.
