Summary of Position

As an R&D Designer you will manage the design process from concept to completion, developing product - together with R&D merchandisers and our own sample room - that is trend relevant and aligns to the aesthetic of Burton consumers, while providing a line that meets the merchandising team’s business objectives, cost parameters and Burton’s sustainability goals. In addition, staying up to date on the latest trends, influencers, aspirational and competitive landscape for their categories, maintaining strong relationships with the team in the US.

Main duties:

Ongoing pipeline of new ideas to maximize sales trends in the China market as well as the global market, evolve key programs, and meet the needs of Burton’s business model

Research and identify emerging trends in silhouettes, shapes, fabrics, details, and colors for Burton in various categories including presentation of your ideas in an inspiring way

Create design flats and tech packs using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and work with PLM

Collaborate with other designers in the US, buyers and technicians for adherence to quality and brand standards and attend fittings in the Kunshan office

Operate with a complete understanding of the development process (which may include design, engineering, pre-costing, overseas development)

Follow seasonal story to develop new products within the brief from the US and demonstrate understanding of look and feel

Partner with vendor and production team to ensure fabric, design details, and garments are within cost parameters while providing value to our consumers

Increase of product range and offering with regard to sustainability:

• Lead innovation strategy work and direction with vendors and our sample room for design, fabric, print/pattern, wash, and construction various categories to achieve performance, margin targets, retail pricing and sustainable products
• Traveling to factories to expand country of origin and test new textiles
• Scout new samples/vendors to recommend products to the team in the US
• Domestic and international store checks

Coordinate and monitor prototype samples for fit, quality, execution and construction

Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, such as laundries, mills etc.

Partner with R&D and development team to achieve KPI targets and budgets

Domestic and international travel as required

Qualifications

• Min. 7 years of Design experience (ladies and men’s in various categories)

· Expert in Illustrator, Photoshop, and/or InDesign

• Fashion design degree preferred
• Experience in developing and identifying seasonal and trends, creating stories and mood boards
• Strong understanding of styling, silhouettes, construction techniques, color, trims, fabric/yarn, print/pattern, and wash
• Ability to create functional, appealing and on point product designs
• Thorough knowledge of trends, fashion, technical apparel and sustainability evolution
• Keen understanding of Burton snowboards
• Ability to filter global trends through the lens of the targeted consumer
• Ability to work collaboratively throughout the organization (US and Asia)
• Sense of urgency, highly detailed, and experience in meeting deadlines
• A positive, outgoing, highly energetic and motivational personality

Reporting Relationships

This position reports to the Sample Room Manager in Kunshan, China.

Language skills

Excellent commence of written and spoken English, Chinese/Mandarin preferred. Speaks effectively before groups of employees and organization. Other SE Asian language is an advantage.
