Scope of works
We have long-term visions for each of our colleagues for their roles in BitCan. Therefore, your responsibilities will vary and progressively increase as you grow with BitCan. However, your experience should enable you to contribute immediately to the following projects:
1. Inversion of field observations for subsurface engineering processes.
Any earth engineering activities disturb the subsurface rock formations, changing various physical or chemical parameters. Some of these changes can be measured indirectly. The project will develop a robust mathematical inversion model and necessary computer programs to constrain the extent and magnitude of the disturbance from the field observation data.
2. Simulation of rock failure and fracturing processes
Rock fails or fractures under shear/tension. Such failure or fracturing is an everyday occurrence. Sometimes, we want it and thus intentionally stimulate the formations to create the fractures/failure desired. Or we try to avoid them. In any case, the key is to understand the failure or fracturing process via simulations.
We will develop our unique simulation capabilities by focusing on the following challenges:
(1) Existence of natural fractures at different scales. The formation to be fractured is already fractured to different degrees during the geological history.
(2) Or the formation is weakly consolidated. Thus, strong nonlinear behavior is a norm.
(3) The driving force for the fracture is hydraulic, i.e., fluid flow is intimately coupled to the rock deformation.
(4) Temperature is another proactive factor to be used for the stimulation. Thus, thermal transport and possibly phase changes are involved.
(5) Large deformation during the geological history in the units of million years will add another challenge.
3. Coupled geomechanical reservoir simulation
The oil/gas industry is our major client. They profit by producing the commodities. Thus, the above simulation on rock failure/fracturing will be tied to the oil/gas flow here. Multiphase and/or multi-component flow and transport will be tackled here.
4. Software development
Part or all of the above-developed simulation capabilities will be marketed in softwares. Creative and convenient GUI’s are the key here. Parallel computing on GPUs is our approach forward.
Qualifications
All applicants must
1. Demonstrate the highest integrity: honest, hard-working and cooperative. Be self-motivated and detail-oriented. We do not micro manage employees and thus reply on your integrity and initiatives to manage your own work pace.
2. Be able to demonstrate your qualifications in sample works related to the above immediate projects. Your sample works should show that you can contribute to these tasks immediately.

More specific qualifications are described below.
1. At least university degrees, preferably advanced degrees at M.Sc. or Ph.D. levels. The university degrees need to be supported with at least 5 years of working experience. Other applicants in engineering or a related field with strong publications are also encouraged to apply.
2. The applied mechanics can be solid mechanics or fluid mechanics. Applied physics can be in geophysics. Applied mathematics should focus on numerical solution to nonlinear problems, large and sparse matrix or mathematical inversion of nonlinear problems.
3. Strong numerical computational abilities and computer programming skills: being able to formulate complex physical problems mathematically, develop efficient algorithms and program it to computer languages. The positions require a strong background in scientific programming (FORTRAN/C++) and large-scale numerical methods (e.g., finite element methods). The knowledge of parallel programming will be a plus.
4. Relevant experience in geomechanics, especially in fully coupled thermo- or hydro-mechanical processes, rock fracture and failure process, constitutive modeling, direct experience in FEM, BEM and FD, such as experience with large-scale stress analysis softwares --- ABAQUS etc. is an asset. This is especially true for the geomechanics specialist.
