About the Regional Affairs and Training & Support Department in Teach For China
Teach For China's Regional Affairs and Training & Support (RA/TS) Department focuses on the pre-service training and ongoing professional development of Teaching Fellows in their first- and second-years of teaching, as well as the external partnerships and long-term sustainability within the region. As a department, we are charged with the responsibility of ensuring our Fellows have the necessary skills, knowledge and mindsets as leaders, teachers and learners in their classrooms, communities and within Teach For China. We are also charged with ensuring our work is grounded in our local context, that we're cultivating strong partnerships to ensure long-term impact in education and are fostering a strong and sustainable organization in the region.
As a developing organization in China, there are many opportunities and challenges that we face as an organization and department. As a member of the RA/TS team in these early years, RA/TS staff have the unique opportunity to shape the direction of our work in teaching and student learning. Staff members also have the unique opportunity to work in a cross-cultural organization in a joint effort to close the achievement gap in China.
Position Summary:
Teach For China seeks passionate, innovative and goal-driven leaders who are not afraid to figure out how to close the achievement gap in rural China. Teach For China (TFC) is seeking Program Managers to manage and develop first- and second- year teaching Fellows to become transformational teachers in the lives of their students by leading students to achieve ambitious and long-lasting academic and personal results, as well as inspire Fellows to become lifelong advocates for closing the educational equity gap. Program Managers manage a cohort of approximately 14-20 first- and second- year teaching Fellows to establish ambitious and inspiring visions and goals, plan purposefully, and engage in data-based problem solving to increase student achievement. In the near term, Program Managers' work with Fellows ensures that their students realize their vision and achieve their academic goals, therefore impacting the opportunities of thousands of students each year. In the long term, Program Managers' impact ensures that teaching fellows become alumni who are effective stewards of the movement to eliminate educational inequity. Program Managers gain valuable management and instructional leadership experience.
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
? Defining and working toward a vision and goals for student achievement and teaching fellows leadership
? Managing a group of approximately 14-20 first- and second- year Teaching Fellows to achieve ambitious outcomes in their classrooms during Summer Institute and the school year :
? Coaching and developing teaching fellows to establish the foundations of their classrooms using the Teaching As Leadership framework: Deeply ambitious visions that will transform the lives of their students, goals to support this vision, purposeful long term plans and unit plans, and rigorous assessments
? Building strong relationships and a strong team culture among their cohort of teaching fellows and investing them in their potential impact in the near and long term
? Observing teaching fellows in their classrooms to gather data on student learning and teacher proficiency
? Reviewing and providing feedback on lesson plans, unit plans, assessments, etc.
? Analyzing student achievement data and problem solving with teaching fellows to prioritize the teacher actions that most impact student performance
? Providing support to teaching fellows outside of the classroom on life issues such as living in rural China, teamwork, emotional, etc.
? Assisting with the resolution of collaboration issues between fellows and local teachers / partner schools
? Building strong relationships with school leadership, local teachers to facilitate effective school placements and establish lasting partnerships
? Lead and mentor teaching fellows to gain the insight and commitment and transition into our alumni movement as true stewards of educational inequity
? Resesarch and develop the necessary tools and curriculum for Fellows
Additional Responsibilities
When time and core workload permit, Program Managers are also expected to choose to participate in or head the following activities
Curriculum / Assessment
Development Working with partners to develop curriculum and/or TFC
standardized assessment as it necessitates by the program
Fellow Secondary Projects Guiding and supporting teaching fellows on developing and
implementing school/community development projects
Recruiting / Selection Participating in important organizational priorities to fuel our
movement
_ Conducting campus talks about our program during the Fall and
Spring recruiting process
_ Spending a few weeks per year as a teaching fellow selector
_ Playing a critical role in the matriculation of new teaching fellows
_ Cultivate teaching fellows and alumni for staff positions
Alumni Impact Liaising with Alumni Impact department to facilitate the information
flow of teaching fellows' professional development needs and
opportunities
Other particulars about this position:
1. Required virtual On-boarding Training for new Program Managers will begin by April or May 2012
2. All Program Managers are expected to participate at Summer Institute (July-August 2012) as Summer Program Managers and/or Curriculum Specialists for TAL sessions. Specific roles at Summer Institute will be determined with the PM once hired.
3. Depending on language ability and the subjects that our Fellows are placed in, Program Managers may support a variety of subject areas not to be limited to their own teaching experience
4. Regional assignments for Program Managers are based on staff preferences as well as regional need, qualifications, etc. Decisions on regional assignments will be determined by August 2012 once Fellow placement is determined
5. Program Managers should expect to regularly travel throughout the rural region where their Fellows are placed in order to observe and provide feedback. Teach For China reimburses staff for travel expenses incurred as based on our reimbursement guidelines.
