About the Regional Affairs and Training & Support Department in Teach For China
Teach For China's Regional Affairs and Training & Support (RA/TS) Department focuses on the pre-service training and ongoing professional development of Teaching Fellows in their first-and second-years of teaching, as well as the external partnerships and long-term sustainability within the region. As a department, we are charged with the responsibility of ensuring our Fellows have the necessary skills, knowledge and mindsets as leaders, teachers and learners in their classrooms, communities and within Teach For China. We are also charged with ensuring our work is grounded in our local context, that we're cultivating strong partnerships to ensure long-term impact in education and are fostering a strong and sustainable organization in the region.
As a developing organization in China, there are many opportunities and challenges that we face as an organization and department. As a member of the RA/TS team in these early years, RA/TS staff have the unique opportunity to shape the direction of our work in teaching and student learning. Staff members also have the unique opportunity to work in a cross-cultural organization in a joint effort to close the achievement gap in China.
Position Summary:
Teach For China seeks passionate, strategic and goal-driven leaders who are not afraid to figure out how to close the achievement gap in rural China. The Professional Development and Curriculum Manager for English (PD-C Manager) will be charged with ensuring all Fellows, particularly those teaching English, are maximizing their impact through best instructional practice. The role has the scope of a small district instructional leader. This individual will create and manage the organizational strategy regarding English instruction for both Yunnan and Guangdong. In addition, this individual will also manage the ongoing region-wide professional development of both Chinese and Foreign Fellows for either Guangdong or Yunnan.
Professional Development and Curriculum Managers will work closely with Ongoing Support staff in both regions, the PD-C Manager for Chinese Subjects, as well as local stakeholders and education experts to push teachers both regionally and nationally, towards ambitious student achievement goals. The Professional Development and Curriculum Manager will also manage a team of professional development facilitators, as well as build and maintain relationships with schools and education partners in the regions.
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Setting a Vision of Excellence for English Instruction for Both Regions
?Defining what an ambitious and meaningful level of learning and teaching English looks like in our local contexts
?Work with various stakeholders (Ongoing Support staff, Fellows, local teachers, government partners, English as a Foreign Language experts, etc.) to develop best instructional practices to train our Fellows teaching English in order to support them in reaching their ambitious goals for student learning
?Coach and support all staff (and Fellows, when appropriate) in sharing a similar vision of excellence, and developing skills to support their Fellows to get there
?Develop and manage content-specific Professional Learning Communities to deepen our collective understanding of English instruction in our instruction
Ensuring Fellows Teaching English Have Access to Strong Curriculum and Tools for Data Driven Instruction.
?Building and maintaining an accurate and rigorous inventory of all English instructional plans, assessments (diagnostic, formative, and summative) being used at the regional level
?Partnering with schools and districts to create a more streamlined approach to Fellow assessments and tools
?Identifying high-priority assessment and tool needs in the region and creating and managing a strategy to fill those needs
Increasing the Effectiveness of Our Fellows in Your Region
?Working with Training and Support managers to determine real time Fellow gaps and appropriate solutions
?Managing and leading regional professional development opportunities for Fellows
oWork with region to analyze data in order to identify leading causes for the top gaps in classrooms. Determine which learning experiences will be best led by the national team or regional teams.
oWork with Training and Support staff, local teacher teams and others to develop learning experiences that are aligned to top trends
oCultivating, hiring, and managing a high-performing team of facilitators who execute professional development sessions in the region
Other particulars about this position:
1.Required virtual On-boarding Training for new Professional Development and Curriculum Managers will begin by March or April 2012
2.All Professional Development and Curriculum Managers are expected to participate at Summer Institute (July-August 2012) to develop Summer Institute curriculum and training for FEllows. Specific roles at Summer Institute will be determined with the Professional Development and Curriculum Manager once hired.
3.Regional assignments for Professional Development and Curriculum Managers are based on staff preferences as well as regional need, qualifications, etc. Decisions on regional assignments will be determined no later than August 2012 once Fellow placement is determined
4.Professional Development and Curriculum Managers should expect to regularly travel throughout the rural regions where Fellows are placed in order to observe, provide support to PMs and MDPs. Teach For China reimburses staff for travel expenses incurred as based on our reimbursement guidelines.

Successful candidates will have experience of:
?Experience teaching English in China, or coaching English teachers in China
?Managing others toward ambitious outcomes

?Analyzing data to draw accurate conclusions
?Operating with urgency and sense of possibility to achieve ambitious, measurable results

Experience Required
?Bachelor's degree required
?Minimum of 1 year of experience achieving ambitious outcomes as an English teacher in China or English instructional coach in or China
?Proficiency in English and background in Chinese (Mandarin)
