Position Profile
Position: Finish Specialist – China
Reports To: Advance Product Quality Planning (APQP) Manager – Asia
Location: Qingdao, China
Operation: Supply Chain
Position Summary:
Work closely with component suppliers, finish materials providers, product engineering, and supplier quality groups. Lead finish development & continuous improvement activities and deploy best finishing practices across the regional supply chain.
Duties and Responsibilities:
? Develop color standards and maintain a structured refresh schedule for all suppliers
? Educate suppliers regarding MBCI lab test procedures and requirements in order to increase the first-pass qualification rates for all finish-related Lab and FAIR submissions.
? Clarify and communicate all finish specifications to suppliers during the initial development stages of new product development / launch timelines and proactively close specification gaps for new products.
? Provide technical leadership direction to the component suppliers, finish material suppliers, and on-site supply quality team as required to dial in color match while working with a variety of different finish processes and materials to include: nitrocellulose, ultra-violet cured, polyurethane, acid cured, pigments, dyes, manual spray application, automated finishing equipment, etc.
? Proactively drive timely schedule completion of color development, color standard refresh, Lab/FAIR submission samples, and on-site Trial qualifications.
? Provide guidance to internal and external team members as required to ensure timely completion of finish-related deliverables.
? Approve and maintain step panels for all suppliers’ colors, and manage refresh schedule.
? Conduct periodic finished product reviews in Asia to ensure mixability across suppliers for multiple sourced programs.
? Develop and lead finish-improvement kaizen events across all suppliers.
? Work with finished component suppliers to develop new color concepts for submission to product marketing groups for presentation to customers.
? Work closely with finish materials providers’ technical personnel to solve non-compliance issues related to visual appearance, specifications, or lab test performance gaps.
? Develop standardized supplier process control methodologies for finish application, part handling, materials management plans, equipment preventative maintenance systems, metrology/calibration systems, and 5-S deployment.
? Responsible for assisting suppliers with implementing locked-in finishing processes and quality assurance plans to support sourcing initiatives.
? Approves all finish and wood preparation process changes for external suppliers of finished components, and provides data-driven rationale for all changes.
Skills and Abilities:
? Superior color discrimination as scored by Munsell Color Acuity test is required.
? Excellent technical proficiency in wood-based finish application techniques is required.
? Strong problem solving and communication skills are required for this position.
? Ability to interact well with others and create a positive teamwork environment required.
? Excellent understanding of the application of X-Rite color development tools.
? Strong computer skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Minitab required.
? Advanced Excel programming and macro development using Visual Basic preferred.
? Must have a strong background in driving continuous improvement efforts in a manufacturing setting.
? Demonstrated experience with Lean / Six Sigma deployment strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Experience, and Education:
? Significant finish development experience with a focus on new product launches is strongly preferred.
? 10+ years of hands-on wood finish experience in a high production facility preferred.
? Background in kitchen cabinet or furniture industries preferred.
? Education: Bachelor of Science (or equivalent) degree in Engineering, Chemistry, or Industrial Technology is required.
? Proficiency in both English and Chinese (Mandarin) is strongly preferred.
Travel:
? Required to travel up to 70% throughout China and overseas in order to support MBCI supplier facilities.
