Research & Development

Job Description Novo Nordisk Research Center China (NNRCC) is one of the biggest R&D centers set up by multinational pharmaceuticals companies in China. It is an integrated part of Novo Nordisk’s R&D organization, focusing on the innovative research to develop novel drugs for the treatment of diabetes, obesity, hemophilia, and growth disorder. NNRCC has more than 200 employees including ~70 PhDs, in a 16,000 m2 state-of-art facility, including biotech laboratories, rodent and dog facilities. It is critically important to maintain the environmental, health and safety /Occupational health and safety (EHS/OHS) in NNRCC in accordance with Novo Nordisk global policies and local policies. The open position EHS Chair plays a key role in ensuring this critical task. The person will also take the role of Quality management.


Responsibilities on EHS :


Overall responsible for EHS management and support and guidance for NNRCC.

Compliance – Ensure compliance to Novo Nordisk global policies and local policies on EHS, and lead the organization to prepare for Novo Nordisk and external audit on EHS.

Leadership - Maintain and drive a OHS group with representatives from all departments of NNRCC. Leading OHS group and engage management for annual Work Place Assessment, Safety Rounds, and relevant actions.

Impact and EHS culture- Maintain a strong OHS culture by driving engagement of all key stakeholders in NNRCC to align OHS goals and actions, including ensuring the engagement of all line heads (4 VPs) for EHS compliance and actions in NNRCC. Ensure adequate OHS awareness in all employees and active reporting of Near-Miss cases to reduce or prevent accidents.

EHS education and consultant - Develop and implement EHS training programs for all levels in NNRCC, and provide professional support and consultant on EHS matters. Function as trainer for on-boarding training for new employee, new manager, and new OHS rep. Function as consultant to ensure correct and high quality filling of OHS cases in global EHS portal including assisting staff for root cause analysis. This task is assisted through the role of a key link between cooperate EHS organizations (COHS, R&D HQ) and NNRCC OHS organisation.

EHS info, status and report – maintain EHS status in NNRCC through active collecting and documentation of information, such as new local EHS policy and regulation, for OHS documentation system (intraweb, e-folder, and hardcopy folders) , and proactive identifying and timely reporting to NNRCC management EHS issues which are necessary to be dealt for OHS compliance.

EHS project and actions – as the coordinator to drive the implementation of EHS project and actions across NNRCC to achieve EHS goal, and continuously improve the EHS management system. This task includes the compliance on OHS aspects for NNRCC operational events, such as facility renovation projects.

Local external stakeholders management and Authorities contact - Deal with and communicate with related local government authorities, and complete all relevant tasks as government requirement. This includes contacting with numerous authorities (such as: Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine; Health Bureau; Environmental Protection Bureau; Police station; Fire Station) to obtain all permits and licenses for the operation of NNRCC; prepare and host the inspection and audit of the authorities. Draft explanations, responses and action plan or solution to any findings from the above inspections and audit; and ensure implementation of the actions with engagement of NNRCC stakeholders. Notify Authorities whenever needed.

Operation EHS – Daily hands-on activities to ensure the handling of above tasks. Such as: SOPs or Local SOPs are updated, adequate materials are in place, relevant SOPs, policy and regulations are properly documented in intraweb and/or other channels; proper EHS trainings and awareness in NNRCC, local license obtained for relevant employees for the daily operation; effective function of OHS team including proper use of EHS portal, on-time conducting annual survey and safety rounds and follow up actions; representing NNRCC for external EHS issues and interactions; collaborate with Facility and Business support teams to assure all facilities and equipment in according with local and company global EHS regulations.

Crisis Management – Lead NNRCC Crisis management system and coordinate crisis event handling if it happens.

Independent decision - Must be able to independently handle complex and important EHS decisions with several executive stakeholders within NNRCC.


Responsibility on Quality management (QM)

The person will dedicate 10-30% time on Quality management with following tasks:

Liaison with HQ QM consultant to ensure compliance on NN QM system in NNRCC.

Build QM competency to provide consultancy to NNRCC staff on QM issues.

Build up QM area in NNRCC by localising global QM system when there is a needs.

Proactive identify value added QM initiatives or improvement actions to enhance the quality and productivity in NNRCC.


Qualifications (minimum requirements):


Bachelor degree or above in Chemical Engineering, Environment Engineer, safety Engineering or a related subject.

At least 5 years EHS relevant experiences in research or manufacturing industry, with a minimum of 3 years or above experience in MNC.

High level of Chinese and English and excellent communication skills in both languages

Proven experience with EHS management system (ISO 14001 & OSHAS 18001) and external certification audit.

Track record of independently initiating project for improving EHS system or operation

Proven experience of multi-tasking and impacting key stake holders of executive levels for implementing EHS activity

Proven experience of interacting with authorities of different levels

Experience in conducting EHS education is preferred

Strong quality minded, and experience in quality area is a plus.

Experience as a EHS manager is a plus, and willingness to be hands-on for daily OHS jobs is a must.

Proven experience in emergency handling is preferred.
