THE LEGAL UNIT/TEAM

The Legal Unit works to ensure Greenpeace East Asia has access to professional and timely legal service. The Legal Unit advices the organization in its daily operation and the campaign activities, including but not limited to legal compliance issues, legal risk assessment, contracts review, legal training, intellectual property management, litigation etc,.


THE POST OF LEGAL COORDINATOR

The Legal Coordinator provides support on getting access to suitable legal services for Greenpeace East Asia Beijing Office and provides practical advice on common day-to-day compliance issues for Beijing Office. The Legal Coordinator also maintains close cooperation with the campaign teams and makes sure that suitable legal strategies are incorporated and implemented in campaigns.


WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR (SPECIAL JOB AD)

The ideal candidates are expected to satisfy the following requirements:
1. It is to hold Bachelor Degree of Law; Master Degree of Law or L.LM Degree is preferable;
2. Major in international law or international human rights law is preferable;
3. Passing Bar Exam is preferable;
4. Good legal writing and analyzing skills;
5. Be proficient in English;
6. 2-3 years legal working experience;
7. Experience in international organization or in the field of public interests law is preferable;

Overall purpose of the job
The Legal Coordinator provides support on getting access to suitable legal services for Greenpeace East Asia Beijing Office and provides practical advice on common day-to-day compliance issues for Beijing Office. The Legal Coordinator also maintains close cooperation with the campaign teams and makes sure that suitable legal strategies are incorporated and implemented in campaigns.

Scope
Report to the Legal Unit Head
Major functions / responsibilities
Conceptual tasks, Strategy development and/or Project management
-? Legal Advice in campaign and organisational projects: Maintain close cooperation with relevant campaign teams from time to time and suggest tactical steps (from legal side) during the implementation of campaigns and/or projects. Alert relevant staff and the Legal Unit Head promptly if the campaign or project work poses additional risks or implications to our ongoing work. Alert Legal Unit Head promptly if the additional risks pose threat to the legal status or charity status of the organization.
Implementation
-? Legal Research and Legal Filing Work: Conduct legal research, legal analysis and legal writing tasks assigned by Legal Unit Head; Handle the work of legal documents filing, keep and monitor legal volumes.
-? Legal cases management: Keep track of legal cases in which Greenpeace East Asia is a stakeholder through local lawyers in order to keep records up to date. Ensure that the communication between Greenpeace and the local lawyers is smooth and efficient. Ensure that prompt and informed decisions are made by the relevant decision makers and senior management in the organization
-? Review on contract and other legal documents: provide professional advice on contract and other legal documents to protect the interest of the organization, or delegate such work to external lawyer and monitor the quality of work.
-? Preparing legal risk assessments: Ensure proposals for activities and local legal advice are received in time; complete summaries of legal advice in order to enable the relevant staff to conduct risk assessments.

Central Communication in Beijing office: Act as a contact for legal inquiries from Greenpeace East Asia staff in Beijing office; draft (non-complex) correspondence with third parties; maintain the internal website and campaign legal toolkit site in order to provide consistent and accurate legal information to those who need it.

Knowledge management: Develop and manage information on all jurisprudence favourable to Greenpeace as well as pro-active litigation conducted by Greenpeace or others; maintain contracts database keep track of (external) legal conferences and training opportunities for relevant Greenpeace East Asia staff.
