Forests Campaigner (Permanent / Full Time)
Greenpeace stands for positive change through action: the courage, independence and global reach to defend nature and promote peace.
Thank you for your interest in applying for this Forests Campaigner role. We hope that this pack gives you an insight into us and our work, plus details of the job and the people you’ll be working with. Everyone who works for Greenpeace is passionate about what we’re trying to achieve. We have big ambitions for our work and we believe it’s an immensely rewarding and inspiring place to work.
WHO WE ARE
Mission of Greenpeace
Greenpeace stands for positive change through action to defend the natural world and promote peace.
History of Greenpeace
In 1971, motivated by their vision of a green and peaceful world, a small team of activists set sail from Vancouver, Canada, in an old fishing boat. Their goal was to protest peacefully against U.S nuclear testing in Amchitka, a tiny island off the West Coast of Alaska. Amchitaka is one of the world's most earthquake-prone regions and home to endangered animals.
Greenpeace has been in East Asia since 1997 to fight climate change, stop toxic pollution, ensure food security, end illegal deforestation and defend the oceans.
Greenpeace has offices in Hong Kong, Beijing, Taipei and Seoul. Environmental problems know no borders, and Greenpeace recognizes the importance of regional offices that work together to achieve effective solutions for a sustainable future.
Surging economic development in East Asia has brought widespread prosperity, but has also taken a severe environmental toll, both regionally and in the world.
China Forests and Ocean Team
Imagine visionary campaigns to address environment problems that are happening outside of China due to Chinese growing demands for global forest and ocean products, when Chinese society at large is still very much predominant with its own daunting domestic environmental issues. The global nature of our campaign issues decides that the team is always in close cooperation with colleagues from other Greenpeace offices in the development and implementation of exciting and important global campaigns and adapting that into local reality.
On forests, Greenpeace goal is to end deforestation by 2020 to protect what is left of these extraordinary ecosystems when as much as 80% of the world's forests have been degraded or destroyed. To achieve this goal, we are currently campaigning to protect nature forests from illegal/destructive logging inside China, Amazon, Congo Basis and Indonesia. Over the past years, Greenpeace has succeed in pushing toys sector, key fast-food players and key retailers in China to cancel contracts with companies that engaged in deforestation and pressured these companies to turn away from deforestation practice. We have also succeeded in pushing for reform of the forestry policies in Hainan and Yunnan to protect natural forests in these provinces.
On ocean, images of Greenpeace activists driving small inflatables to stop whaling activities have continued to inspire the public. In addition to anti-whaling, Greenpeace ocean campaign has over the years developed into other new missions to save the ocean. Globally, 90.1% of the world fish stocks are fully fished or overfished. Severe overcapacity of the fishing industry with too many boats and too few fish left has become one of the major causes. This is exacerbated by lack of monitoring and surveillance at sea that allow illegal fishing to continue. In China, Greenpeace has been making relentless efforts in documenting and exposing the overfishing and illegal fishing, and calls on key stakeholders to adapt a sustainable fisheries model in order to protect oceans and preserve more fish for the future.
THE POST OF FOREST CAMPAIGNER
The Forests Campaigner provides specialized campaign expertise in Greenpeace’s ongoing or emerging forests campaign works. The Forests Campaigner is directly involved in the development and implementation of campaign project plans, under the leadership of the project leader. The Forests Campaigner will also work with external stakeholders to further Greenpeace’s campaign goals.
