UL-Wiklund, a member of the UL (Underwriters Laboratories) family of companies, is a human factors engineering (HFE) consulting team that specializes in the evaluation and design of medical technology. Currently, UL is experiencing strong demand for its human factors engineering services in Asia, including frequent requests for support from customers in China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.
We seek a senior human factors engineering specialist to support and grow UL’s human factors engineering services, serving as the local leader in Asia and based in China. The local leader will work closely with UL’s HFE teams in the USA and the Netherlands, and report directly to the HFE team’s General Manager.
ABOUT OUR HFE TEAM
UL-Wiklund works with clients to produce compelling user interfaces and user experiences. Our research activities include observing people interacting with products and systems, and conducting interviews, focus groups, and usability tests with representative device users. Our work ranges from quick-response product critiques to full-scale, product development human factors research programs. In addition to conducting user research, we design and provide input to software and hardware user interfaces, labeling, and learning aids (e.g., user manuals, quick reference cards). Our design support work ranges from quick-response design exercises to full-scale user interface design programs.
Our work is concentrated in the medical industry, involving research, design, and evaluation of diagnostic and therapeutic devices as well as information management systems. Our portfolio includes hemodialysis machines, glucose meters, insulin pumps, heart pumps, nerve stimulators, inhalers, defibrillators, X-ray systems, and multiple surgical tools. Our portfolio also includes non-medical products such as an ice cream machine, museum website, automotive diagnostic tools, and a network management software application.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
You will provide leadership and technical expertise as UL grows our human factors engineering services throughout Asia. Working with the HFE team’s General Manager, you will be responsible for growing a team in Asia and providing human factors engineering services to current and new clients. You will work closely with our HFE staff based in Concord, MA, USA to become familiar with our organization’s HFE procedures and applied practices, as well as build effective relationships with other HFE team members. You will also work closely with UL’s sales and marketing teams, supporting their efforts and helping them identify opportunities and “win” new business. You will deliver team capability presentations, prepare proposals, and establish contracts to deliver requested HFE services.
Specific technical responsibilities will include teaching HFE workshops, developing HFE program and usability test plans, conducting design reviews (i.e., critiques), performing task and risk analyses, conducting and overseeing usability tests and associated reporting efforts, and writing HFE reports for the FDA and other regulators.
ABOUT YOU
At a minimum, you should have a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Factors Engineering or a related discipline. You should have at least five years of directly applicable work experience. An advanced degree in HFE or a related discipline is preferred, in which case less work experience would be acceptable. You should feel equally capable of managing a team, as well as serving as a subject matter expert who will perform technical work the majority of the time. You should be self-motivated, well-trained in HFE, and comfortable multi-tasking and working to meet deliverable deadlines.
This position requires fluency in English and Chinese, strong written and verbal communication skills in both languages, and the ability to travel within China and abroad to meet the needs of the business and our customers.
The location for this office within China (e.g., Shanghai, Beijing) is still under consideration. Ability to relocate to the selected city is a must. A full relocation package will be provided.
