JOB DESCRIPTION
Role Description / Working Relationships
The School Counselor will work closely with the Dean of Students and Division Heads and must understand fully and support enthusiastically the stated mission and purpose of the Academy. She/he is expected to model behavior and attitudes that build community, courtesy, and compassion in our boarding and day student society. High standards of ethical behavior, integrity, leadership and professional acumen are essential. Positive enjoyment of the job and a lively sense of humor will be esteemed.
The School Counselor will prepare a comprehensive school counseling program that focuses on student outcomes, addressing issues such as coping skills, communication skills, and strategic planning for each child. The School Counselor will create a vision statement and develop program goals that align with the mission of the Academy.
The School Counselor promotes a safe and equitable social environment and strives to safeguard the rights and dignity of every community member. The School Counselor will lead the community through culturally relevant sensitivity and intervention programs, such as diversity and peer mediation training.
Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:
? Providing counseling services to students (both boarding and day), parents, school staff and the community at large;
? Spending a substantial portion of work time in contact with students or in activities that have direct or indirect service to student support;
? Creating yearly goals and objectives for the counseling program and communicating these plans with all constituents;
? Preparing action plans and coordinating activities designed to assist students in establishing personal goals and developing future plans;
? Providing responsive services to meet the immediate needs and concerns of students and the school community. These services may include individual or small group counseling, mediation, negotiation or crisis response and management;
? Providing referral services to families to locate additional support services in the community at large. These services may include consultation and coordination with parents, teachers and other community organizations;
? Participating fully as a member of the School Wellness team.
The School Counselor’s performance will be evaluated against basic standards of counseling practice and the implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the school counseling program, the school counselor will use data to show the impact that counseling has had on student participation, behavior, and achievement.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
1. Personal Skills and Abilities
Must be bilingual in Chinese and English.
2. Knowledge
Advanced Degree required, such as a Master’s degree in school counseling, psychology or a related field. Licensure essential.
3. Education and Experience
Should have more than 5 years of school experience, preferably with primary and middle school-aged children.
