About the Position
Global Banking is seeking a Regional Vice President for the Shanghai office to recruit, develop, lead and manage a growing team of relationship managers, analysts, and relationship associates in expanding a portfolio of profitable corporate and commercial clients with prudent credit discipline. The focus will be on working with the Chinese subsidiaries (WOFEs) of Wells Fargo's US customers and developing relationships with strong Chinese corporate (SOEs and large POEs) which have subsidiaries/investments in the US. This is an ideal position for a hardworking and ambitious individual with proven success managing a relationship management team in China, and a strong understanding of how foreign banks operate in China.
The successful candidate will be a dynamic, highly motivated, results oriented team player with a 'hands-on', 'in the trenches' approach to successfully grow and manage a team to source, develop, and maintain a portfolio of relationships. This person is an idea-driven individual who is creative and innovative in structuring solutions to meet client needs while exhibiting sound, mature business judgment.
Responsibilities:
The primary areas of responsibility are as follows:
Financial Performance & Business Development
· Responsible for maximizing the growth and profitability of the regional office, motivating the team to achieve financial targets and business development (sales) goals set in partnership with the Area Manager
· Responsible for recruiting top quality talent to achieve Global Banking goals and objectives
· Establish and implement a business development (sales) plan for relationship managers of identified clients and prospects in-market (i.e., list of clients and prospects, tiering/segmentation of clients and prospects, calling plan, etc.) with a key emphasis on credit and trade services
· Provide specific business development guidelines and targets to relationship management team with attention to monthly calling plans and strategic targets
· Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of market dynamics, macroeconomic and political circumstances that could affect Wells Fargo business with clients in the local territory. Report on and use market intelligence to capitalize on potential opportunities and to avoid possible pitfalls/manage bank and country risk
· Demonstrate in-depth understanding of Wells Fargo and Global Banking products and develop relationships with key internal service providers and the Global Banking US offices, to effectively assemble and orchestrate appropriate teams of internal resources to meet GB team member and external client needs.
· Effectively represent the bank and its products (both China-based products and US products) to the market and to the executive management of client and prospective companies, building lasting, influential, consultative client relationships with key decision makers at all levels
Office Management / Compliance/ Administration
· Accountable for credit approvals and for the quality of the GB Shanghai loan portfolio; monitor client portfolio; ensure that compliance requirements are met; identify issues and recommend appropriate strategies/actions
· Advise and inform executive management regarding significant client and market trends and issues on a proactive basis and recommend appropriate strategies/actions
· Provide sound and enlightened leadership and management to team members; motivate, coach and counsel team members to achieve objectives
· Enhance the bank's presence and profile in the local community
· Consult as needed to the US offices as the on-the-ground expert in China on the local market and identified companies/entities (management, financial strength, collateral support)
· Support the work of the RMs, as needed, to develop and manage corporate banking relationships with indigenous parent companies that have subsidiaries in the US with the goal of banking the US subsidiary. Work with US offices to increase the Bank's market share among US subsidiaries of local corporates
· Advise in the planning and execution of periodic product seminars for clients and prospects in the region
· Manage the RMs to ensure that Know-Your-Customer/Compliance records are fully in order and completed according to strict deadlines
· Work closely with the Division Manager and Area President to build the Global Banking business model and ensure coordination with the Asia regional objectives.
· Provide input into the build out of regional capabilities (lending, FX, cash management, trade, investments) as they relate to the needs of local subsidiaries of US customers
Licensing / Regulatory
· Partner with Global Expansion Initiative team members on the effort to obtain banking licenses required to build corporate and commercial banking capabilities in Shanghai.
· Play leadership role in the development of Wells Fargo's RMB lending, deposit, foreign exchange, and cash management products in China; working in close collaboration with Product Management teams.
Fully understand any pre- and post- license regulatory permissions and ensure teams comply with all regulatory limitations around allowable sales, marketing and underwriting activities conducted in Shanghai.
Requirements:
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:
· Experience in China of successfully managing a team of business development/ relationship management professionals to grow a commercial/ corporate banking portfolio of relationships, preferably with multinational corporations with a US or foreign bank.
· Ten or more years of relevant commercial or corporate banking experience
· Strong credit analysis and structuring skills, including a demonstrated ability to understand, design and articulate transactions working with the risk management team to structure, negotiate and close facilities, as well as to provide proactive risk management of the portfolio
· Knowledge of full array of products/services applicable to the target market (e.g., credit, treasury management, trade services/trade finance, foreign exchange etc.)
· Good understanding of the Chinese banking regulatory environment as it impacts Corporate and Commercial Banking business.
· Strong understanding of the RMB and foreign lending and deposit products and markets.
· Demonstrated effectiveness in working with all levels of management, internally and externally
· Demonstrated experience leading teams and mentoring/ developing staff members - using appropriate interpersonal styles and techniques to motivate the team, foster effective partnerships, and gain acceptance of ideas or plans
· Masters Degree in a business-related field
· Strong finance and accounting skills with familiarity with international financial reporting standards (IFRS) and with regulatory and market practices of financial services in China
· Candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills with an ability to deliver high quality presentations to clients, colleagues and the public as required
· Fluency in Mandarin and English -written and spoken - is mandatory.
· Expected travel within 25% to Asia regional centers and the US.
