BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

· BA/BS, law, business or agriculture related degree and 5 years experience in natural resource management or equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Experience negotiating complex agreements.

· Experience communicating with the public and/or media both in writing and verbally.

· Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, Web browsers, etc.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Conservation and Agriculture Specialist will draw on TNC's global science and best practices as well as emerging project work within China to engage producers and policy makers towards the conception, design and implementation of innovative best practices which enhance production while achieving conservation objectives. The Conservation and Agriculture Specialist will also engage with major trading interests, policy makers and TNC counterparts in other developing countries to instigate processes that replicate the successes of TNC and other like-minded organizations in balancing soy & palm production with conservation needs. Requires sufficient knowledge and work experience of a Conservation and Agriculture Specialist in addition to one or more of the following functions:

· Work with field team and partners, supporting TNC China Program projects to develop cutting-edge conservation-driven best practices related to agriculture

· Assist project leads in applying those practices appropriately and cost-effectively

· Collaborate with the donor foundation for this position towards their interest in sustainable agricultural development

· Direct the donor towards appropriate specialized resources as appropriate

· Take appropriate advantage of the donor's extensive network of ag-related government contacts

· Develop funding proposals to support projects demonstrating proof-of-concept

· Advocate with Government and other stakeholders to adopt TNC-tested practices to enhance productivity while protecting land and water resources

· Identify major trends, government and corporate policies, and key Chinese actors in import of soy and palm oil

· Engage with key importers and policy makers. Create enhanced awareness of best land use practices for production of soy and palm

· Develop partnerships with key importers. Work with TNC programs in producing countries to ensure new importer commitments are followed by on-the-ground conservation results

· Coordinate with TNC China beyond Borders initiative to create maximum impact from working with Chinese global actors

The incumbent of this position will be working towards the goal of enhancing agriculture productivity and sustainable trading/sourcing while achieving conservation objectives.

Priority of the incumbent 's efforts will be given to influencing domestic Chinese agriculture in directions that support conservation within China. Other staff supporting the Conservation beyond Borders initiative may take on some or all of the above-stated tasks under Responsible Sourcing. Nonetheless, the Ag Specialist will function as the expert advisor for such efforts.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

· BA/BS, law, business or agriculture related degree and at least 5 years experience in natural resource management or equivalent combination of education and experience

· Ability to make sound decisions on legal, financial, conservation and reporting issues

· Knowledge of land management conservation practice and conservation science

· Explaining conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences

· Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities

· Ability to communicate and work closely with scientists

· Working with media and influential officials, especially governmental, to improve Conservancy programs' outcomes

· Familiarity with principles of land acquisition

· Knowledge of ecological land management principles

· Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management, and natural resource preservation

· Experience in training and curriculum design.

· Demonstrated experience communicating effectively with the public and/or media

· Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s)

· Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results

· Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).

· Excellent communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages

NOTIONAL DELIVERABLES:

Time frame within one-two years of establishment of the position:

· Introduce TNC global science & best practices related to agriculture & conservation to TNC China Program staff

· Lead internal China Program discussion to determine which of those should be put in practice in China in near term

· Promote agreed concepts and best practices to policy makers

· Achieve tangible commitments from government planners in at least two provinces (or one practice-level in-province commitment and one policy-level central ministry/agency commitment)

· On soy/palm trade, engage with TNC in-country staff and other conservation partners in producing/exporter countries to identify handful of geographies where conservation needs and impact of Chinese commodity demand intersect

· Analyze political and other feasibility for working from both the production end and from China to achieve conservation solutions consistent with production needs and minimal or no impact on pricing

· Ensure that 1-2 sustainable sourcing initiatives kicked off, with cooperation of producing countries as well as key Chinese actors on demand side

COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING:

· Coordinates multiple projects with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing timeframes

· Interprets guidelines, evaluates information, and modifies processes to adapt to changing circumstances

· Compiles data, resolves disparities, and modifies processes to generate plans

· Resolves routine issues independently, consulting with supervisor to develop plans for resolution of complex and unusual problems

· Cultivates and develops creative ideas to improve conservation strategies

· Applies diversified knowledge of scientific principles and practices to a variety of assignments

· Negotiates complex agreements in political environments

· Identifies and disseminates lessons learned, best practices and methods, tools, consistencies and inconsistencies across plans

· Ensures program accountability and legal compliance

DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:

· Ability to make sound decisions for TNC is the following areas (legal, financial, conservation, reputation)

· Makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and judgment

· Performs tasks with minimal supervision

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT - FINANCIAL AND SUPERVISORY:

· Manage multi-disciplinary administrative and professional staff, with responsibility for performance management, training and career development. Establish clear directions and set stretch objectives.

· May need to gain cooperation from outside parties to accomplish program goals

· Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development, and meeting fundraising targets.

· Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements

· Establish and maintain optimal standards of performance for the department or program while controlling costs and administering budgets.

· Responsible for ensuring that public and private funds are raised to meet program needs.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:

· Networks with diverse groups, including land owners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for the Conservancy and publicize Conservancy efforts

· Provide a variety of information to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and assisting workflow throughout the organization.

· Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people, including scientists, preserve staff, and others, providing and obtaining needed information

· Collaborates with a wide range of conservation partners to identify research needs, present technical concepts at national or international conferences, and support fieldwork

· Provides training for internal and external colleagues on ecological and conservational scientific principles

· Ability to simplify and explain the principles of conservation science and practices to technical and non-technical audiences

· Communicates strategic project goals and objectives.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

The Conservation and Agriculture Specialist may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:

· require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain

· present frequent possibility of injury

· require long hours in isolated settings
