Responsibilities:

The purpose of the Shell Groundwater Subject Matter Expert position is to provide groundwater guidance to internal environmental professionals on the management of water issues across the entire portfolio of development projects supported by the Shell Canada Environment & Regulatory team.
For some assets/projects,the scale and/or complexity of the water issues faced will demand more direct accountability for delivery of water related programs,rather than just the provision of subject matter expertise.
Specific areas of responsibility may include:

Develop and implement groundwater monitoring programs and other hydrogeological studies to aid in the understanding and management of risks associated with potential impact to aquifers and/or water supply wells.
Activities where support will be required include seismic, drilling, hydraulic fracturing, and ongoing operations of wells and facilities.
Programs will typically be handed over to environmental coordinators for the ongoing operations phase.
Manage consultants and other contractors (safety, scope, cost, schedule) to successfully deliver water related programs.
Provide technical review of hydrogeological studies (e.g. pre- and post-seismic groundwater well monitoring reports).
Present results of groundwater monitoring programs to members of the public and/or regulatory agencies.
Provide input to project/asset teams on the identification of water source options for supplying drilling, completions, and facility operations.
Provide input on water related issues to project teams conducting environmental impact assessments.
Manage site investigation and remediation for any spills/leaks during project implementation,prior to handover to operations.
Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for implementation of Shell internal standards.
Represent Shell’s Canadian operations on internal and external teams.
Stay abreast of, and influence emerging regulatory issues related to water supply and contamination management.
Represent Shell on external water-related committees and engage with external stakeholders as required.
Provide due diligence support on water-related issues.

Requirements:

Must have legal reqirement ot work in Canada on a full time basis for anyone other than their current employer.
Requires a Bachelor’s and preferably a Master’s degree in hydrogeology or a related field such as geology, hydrology, hydrogeochemistry, or environmental engineering, with a strong emphasis in groundwater.
10 plus years experience required, preferably in the E&P industry.
Strong project management and coordination skills and experience in working with multi-discipline teams.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills (ability to clearly communicate complex hydrogeological concepts in simple terms).
Experience in dealing with external parties (government, NGO’s, industry) and the public.
Self-starter; works well in team environments and under pressure able to work with others toward a common goal, in an open and transparent way.
Experience with drilling and completions activities and the technical aspects related to monitoring well installation and monitoring network design.
Strong analytical skills in the areas of groundwater quality, geochemical modeling, shallow aquifer test analysis, and experience with groundwater modeling.
Field experience in hydrogeological testing methods and experience interpreting aquifer test results.
Knowledge of regulatory approvals process and issues related to water supply and contamination management in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada.
Good strategic thinker with the demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategies for environmental management.
Extensive experience in the field of Environmental Planning.
