Responsibilities:

Individually & through direct reports:
provide pro-active,value-added indirect tax counsel & advice to Shell’s Canadian businesses
proactively monitor & respond to proposed Canadian indirect tax legislative proposals at federal, province & local levels, including advising internal stakeholders on required system/process adjustments
proactively manage & oversee Canadian indirect tax compliance processes for Shell Canada businesses to provide for complete,correct & timely tax compliance
proactively manage & oversee government audits of Shell’s Canadian Indirect Tax returns working closely with Shell Canada Tax Audits and Litigation team
Actively participate as a member of Shell’s Americas Regional Indirect Tax Leadership team in team projects and initiatives
Own & operate relevant SOX controls relating to Canadian indirect taxes processes in a manner which results in clean attestations & reviews
Represent Shell with certain Canadian industry groups dealing with indirect taxes
Supervise & manage the professional development of the Canadian Indirect Tax team
Ensure there is a process in place for compliance with the Tax Manual of Framework & Controls (TMFC) regarding Canadian indirect taxes & reporting of any breaches thereof in accordance with established practices
Purpose

Lead & manage a team of 6 indirect tax advisors delivering pro-active indirect tax advice (GST/PST/HST,excise,customs duties) & end-to-end oversight of indirect tax processes in respect of Shell’s Canada operations
Member of Americas Regional Indirect Tax Leadership Team supporting execution of Shell’s global indirect tax strategy both regionally & globally
Special Challenges

Responsible for pro-active Canadian indirect tax advice & tax compliance involving a large geographical area of operations & a variety of complex business operations, with dissimilar laws depending on location
Responsible for staying up-to-date on Canadian indirect tax laws & developments
Responsible for establishing & maintaining good, effective relationships with Shell business personnel & stakeholders, especially senior Finance & operations personnel
Responsible for establishing & maintaining good relationships with external Canadian indirect tax administrators
Responsible for conducting Canadian indirect tax operations within an agreed budget & staff count

Requirements:

Licensed attorney, chartered accountant, or equivalent certification
Minimum 10 years of energy business & industry taxation experience
Deep, broad knowledge of Canadian indirect tax laws/regulations
Supervisory/management experience within a large tax organization environment is an asset
Strong negotiation skills & effective at influencing others within & outside own organization
Proven client/project management & task prioritization skills
Ability to discharge all duties and responsibilities without regular, close supervision.
Effective communicator of complex tax issues, both written & oral
Ability to adapt to new/changing circumstances & ambiguous/pressured situations
Ability to creatively propose solutions to Canadian indirect tax issues, while effectively evaluating & balancing associated risks
Effective team player on local & global cross-functional/cross-sector teams
