Responsibilities:

The primary function of Oil Sands Geotechnical Engineering is the design, construction and performance management of tailings dykes, waste dumps and pit walls.

This position reports to the Geotechnical Design Team Lead within the Mine Technical Services department.

Principal accountabilities include:

Intermediate Geotechnical Design Engineer:
Prepare geotechnical designs, reports, construction drawings, construction quality controls and as-built reports for specific structures assigned to the position,under the direction of a senior geotechnical engineer.
Plan, coordinate and supervise geotechnical field investigations and laboratory testing programs.
Manage, interpret and summarize geological and geotechnical data.
Perform geotechnical stability, seepage and deformation analyses.
Interpret field instrumentation and performance data and modify designs and construction plans as necessary.
Senior Geotechnical Design Engineer:

Lead Geotechnical design team assignments to prepare geotechnical designs, reports, construction drawings, construction quality controls and as-built reports for mine waste structures and pit slopes.
Provide technical assurance of geotechnical and tailings designs by Shell or external consultants.
Manage 3rd party consultants performing geotechnical and tailings engineering.
Assure geotechnical and tailings engineering inputs to the annual mine and tailings plans.
Provide senior level advice on geotechnical and tailings engineering projects and execution strategies.
Coach junior staff in the Geotechnical Design Group.
Contribute to work standards, procedures and guidelines for the quality management system.
Maintain strong linkages with Tailings Engineering, Projects, Mine and Tailings Planning and Mine Operations.

Requirements:

Intermediate Geotechnical Design Engineer Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geological Engineering with a Geotechnical focus. Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering is a strong asset.
4 to 8 years of Geotechnical Engineering experience with a focus on earth dams and mine pit walls.
Ability to work effectively within a multi-discipline team environment consisting of Geotechnical Engineering, Tailings Engineering, Projects, Mine and Tailings Planning and Mine Operations.
Senior Geotechnical Design Engineer Requirements:
Master’s or Ph.D. Degree in Geotechnical (preferred), Civil or Geological Engineering
8 to15 years experience in geotechnical designs for dams, pit walls, and other large earth structures. Desirable to have mining operations experience.
Significant project and people supervisory experience.
Ability to build and strengthen a multi-disciplinary team culture, working effectively with Geotechnical Engineering, Tailings Engineering, Projects, Mine and Tailings Planning and Mine Operations.
Experience leading design teams.
Experience motivating, coaching and developing employees.
Requirements for Both Positions
Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
Professional Geotechnical Engineer registered or eligible for registration with APEGA.
Oil Sands experience is a strong asset
Strong working knowledge of geotechnical engineering and related software: Slope/W, Seep/W, FLAC, AutoCAD, GTILT, gINT, Vulcan.
Experience in large earth structure design and construction activities, including planning, site investigations, design, constructing, monitoring, and reporting.
Experience in managing geotechnical site investigation and instrumentation planning, including selecting appropriate drilling methods, selecting monitoring instrumentation, interpreting instrumentation data.
Thorough knowledge of geotechnical engineering, including assessing and analyzing foundation conditions and construction materials, stability analyses, seepage analyses, stress-strain deformation analysis, planning geotechnical structures, and monitoring and interpreting data from lab and field investigations.
Thorough knowledge of geotechnical principles, including soil and rock stiffness and strength, soil consolidation, slope stability, groundwater flow, fill compaction and performance, field investigation techniques, and geotechnical laboratory testing.
Knowledge of related disciplines: oil sands geology, hydrogeology, mining engineering, tailings engineering, mine operations.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with peers and clients. Skilled in technical writing and reporting.
Ability to work in a busy multitask environment.
Quality work and attention to detail.
Motivated to develop strong technical skills in Geotechnical Engineering
